EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Belle laid her grocery bags on the stone benchtop in the kitchen and glanced at the clock on the wall. It was nearly seven o’clock. She knew Ben never lasted long at those work drinks. He was usually exhausted by the end of the week. She could count on him being home by ten, which left her just enough time to knead the dough for the bread and pasta, allow it to rest, prepare the vegetables, roll the pasta and have a linguine primavera and caprice salad on the table for when he walked through the door.

She poured herself a glass of Shiraz and unpacked the groceries, lining them up on the bench. She retrieved her pasta machine and cling wrap and slipped her apron over her head, tying it around her waist.

This really was a second home for her. She knew her way around with ease, and most of the appliances, pots, pans and knives were hers. Ben was a terrible cook and hadn’t owned so much as a wooden spoon before she’d taken charge of his kitchen. She’d given him a small coffee machine as a twenty-seventh birthday present and he’d truly loved it. It was the only thing he operated in this part of the house.

They’d tossed around the idea of her moving in, especially now that they were engaged. Ben, though, ever the pragmatic, thought it better to wait. He wanted to move them into a bigger house when they got married, one of those ridiculously oversized mansions in Lavender Bay, with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms and the water of the harbour lapping at the back steps. He didn’t think it was worth her moving to Pyrmont only to have to move again once they got married.

‘Besides,’ he always argued, ‘the terrace is too small for the two of us. Where would we fit all your things; all those books you have?’

Belle would obligingly agree, although if she had to be honest, she’d have been perfectly content in the terrace in Pyrmont. Charming and cosy, with that lovely little garden out the back. She didn’t need copious amounts of space or a pretentious piece of real estate worth a whopping price tag. She just needed Ben, and she’d have been happy in a caravan if it meant they could be together.

  4. Hi Joseph! Thanks for posting :)

I would happily read a prequel to any book by Kate Morton. Her stories rarely know no bounds. They are always very detailed and the story can go in a multitude of directions, so a prequel could easily slot into one of her story lines.

Glad to see you on the tour!! Good luck with the giveaway.
