Gun For Hire from JJ Montgomery!
The job should have been easy—patrol a swank beach that serves as a backyard for Maui’s rich, kick out the riffraff, and get a tan in the process. But rent-a-cop Samantha Winters didn’t anticipate a deliciously grumpy cop, Sergeant Grady Roark, who comes down to the beach to bust her chops and instead leaves her breathless…and wondering why the one man who could help her seems determined to thwart her at every turn.
Grady is keeping secrets from Sam that have him walking the line between attraction and duty. But when Sam becomes the target of a shadowy organization, Grady will have to choose between the law and the temptation of a woman who has him breaking every rule he’s ever known.
The job should have been easy, but when the bullets start flying, Sam learns nothing is as easy as it seems when you’re a Gun for Hire.

What initially inspired you to write Gun for Hire?
I couldn’t resist, is the easy answer! I was on vacation with my family in Hawaii and witnessed this rent-a-cop in a showdown with the police and every tourist on the beach. And she was giving everyone hell, including the cops, who she seemed to know well. It turned out she was working for a land developer. I couldn’t help but wonder, why on earth would anyone wake up every morning and do this job? Something had to be motivating her. I had a rough draft within a few weeks.
Tell us little about the characters in Gun for Hire.
The story centers around Sam Winters, a woman stuck between the past she left behind and a future she can’t imagine. She’s pretty emotionally battered and bruised when the story starts out, but she’s a fighter and she’s doing everything she can to put on her “armor” and just get on with life. And then Grady enters her life and she’s drawn into a life or death battle with a shadowy organization that wants her dead. She has no choice but to evolve and grow. And Grady is there right along with her.
Grady Roark is Sam Winters’ foil. Both he and Sam are convinced they’re each other’s worst enemies, and yet they both feel that they’d rather be fighting with each other than happy with anyone else. They’ve got history, they’ve got attraction…but can they actually get along?
The comment I get most about this book is that people love some of my supporting cast – Sam’s sister, Josie, is battling her own emotional demons. And she’s doing it while fighting a major attraction to Grady’s partner, Kai. It’s no surprise that they are the focus of book 2!
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The second draft! The first draft flew out of me and then the second draft made me realize that a slower, more deliberate process might have made the rewrite process less painful. But I’m new to this, so hey – it’s a learning point. Next time I resolve to be more of a plotter, less of a pantser.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I loved writing about the relationship between Sam and her sister, Josie. I have a sister and there are so many moments in the book that are drawn from things my sister and I have experienced. It made me love and appreciate my real sister so much more to put those words on paper.
What are your future project(s)?
I’m currently working on book 2 in the Maui Heat Series, which is Josie and Kai’s story. If you think Josie has been through some tough times, just hold on, it’s about to get harder. But Kai and Josie’s relationship is just as sweet and I hope this book allows the emotion to build between them, even as they face more hardship.

“Why John Deacon, Sam?” Grady’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.
I threw my hands up. “It could be Jesus Christ himself signing my paycheck and I’d still be doing it for the same reasons! The job works for my family. What is your problem with John Deacon? And don’t tell me nothing—you owe me more than that.”
“Maybe I’m just jealous.” Grady stared ahead. “Like you said.”
My stomach did a loop. “Don’t use your charm on me, I’m immune—”
“You think I’m charming?”
“Hell no, I don’t! And particularly not when you’re avoiding my question.”
“But you said I had charm.” He tilted his head and gave me a long, sly look from the corner of his eyes. His teeth flashed white from that tanned face and I nearly had to fan myself when I realized I loved the feeling of Grady teasing me.
I threw my hands up in the air. “I give up!”
He wanted to talk about confusing? All I knew about Grady prior to this day was that he was six-foot-two of gorgeous and about as warm as a polar bear on the North Pole in January. And now—
