I read once that someone commits suicide when their pain becomes greater than their capacity to cope. I’m not sure that’s completely it. Or that anything as horrifying as suicide can ever be termed so simply. But the words carried truth, none the less. And stuck with me.
For Love of Money is a romance with a happy ending. It’s a clean read. A family read. It’s also a ttq novel which means it’s going to have some intense emotional fiction on those pages. I don’t choose what to write about. I write what comes to me. In this book, I thought I was writing about a hormonal teenager who was ‘all about me’ and maybe even a bit of a brat. Instead, I was presented with Kelsey. I love this girl. She’s strong. And nurturing. She’s also a kid struggling with a horrible secret that no one knows about. It’s a secret that is driving her into serious bouts of depression. Her doctor father, and her counselor, both fear she might become suicidal. Wow. That’s a long way from where I started.
But, as always, I gave up my way and took the journey. Kelsey’s story has sadness. It has angst and darkness. But when you read her, you feel her strength. You feel her capacity for joy. You feel all of the love she has to give. As I finished this book, I felt like I wanted to be Kelsey when I grew up. Emotionally grew up, at least. I felt like I still have a ways to go. But I have a road map. All from a thirteen year old kid.
This is why I read romance. And why I write it. Because there are so many things we don’t know. So many roads to travel. Journeys to take. Things to find that will make our lives happier. Nuances that we might not know or be able to access or accept, but that, when we read, we can feel. I’m not saying that Kelsey’s journey will turn your life around, but I’d bet that, at the very least, she’ll warm your heart. And who can ever have too much of that?
