Excerpt Two:

After checking his cuffs and straightening his jacket, he opened the dressing

room door and stepped into the narrow hallway as though nothing had happened.

A clerk eyed him suspiciously as he passed.

Vince tried swallowing the grin threatening to give him away and failed.

That was a first.

He wanted this weekend to be romantic, passionate, and memorable as hell.

That goal challenged him to act more boldly than he ever had. He hoped she’d

enjoyed their first risqué encounter. Plan B didn’t have nearly as many kisses and

climaxes.

Vince took a casual post near the exit to wait. He spotted her a minute later at

the cash register. He checked his watch. Ten thirty. They had plenty of time to get to

the picnic. He smiled as she approached.

She handed him a small bag. “You owe me seventy-five bucks.”

“I do?” He looked inside and saw a tie that matched his suit perfectly. “Hush

money?”

“Something like that. I guess it’s one way to make a sale.” She giggled.

Thank you for hosting me today. Your blog has a fabulous name! I'm thrilled to share the release of One Night in Minneapolis with all of you. Today I'm answering some questions about the craft of fiction writing.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

I'm an author who likes to have lots of elbow room, so to speak, when it comes to telling my story. The City Nights series is based on characters spending 24 hours or less together. This series tops off at about 20,000 words per book so you have to make every word count! The significant number of erotic scenes had to be enjoyable, and I had to be able to make the heroine, Skylar, loveable. Men in romances can easily be scoundrels for sleeping around or having few boundaries but women get called names and readers don't like them.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

It's based in my adopted hometown of Minneapolis. It's a great city with lots to see and do. It's modern and vibrant, beautiful and surrounded by the Mississippi River and seven lakes. The book opens at the Mall of America and hopscotches to other places I enjoy going to. If you get a chance, please visit this great city and its sister, St. Paul, which is also our capitol. The weather can be challenging in January but even then, there are fabulous places to go to. In fact, Minneapolis will host the Super Bowl next January.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I'm working on a collection of short stories that isn't a romance. I've written about fifty pages so far that I'm pretty happy with but I haven't figured out what to do with the piece. It's really intimidating. I'm going to finish writing and editing them and see what becomes evident after that. I'm at a point in my life that I won't pressure myself to finish projects the way I used to. I also have a full-time job as a communicator and a family.

Do you ever get writer’s Block? Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Yes. I had a significant life event a few years ago and completely stopped writing fiction. I received the rights back to some of my books during this time and put those on the market but I didn't create anything new. I had no desire. This was shocking for someone who used to finish three full novels a year. I had to muster my energy and confidence. I went back to what I call a "forced write." Maybe I'd write a poem, a couple paragraphs of nonsense, a blog comment – anything to get my muse back in the groove. Then, I took out this manuscript and just started re-reading it, editing it, feeling the rhythm of the story and eventually writing again. Having patience with myself isn't something I'm used.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different?

Not really. I try to organize the characters' motivations before I begin writing so that doesn't happen. It's more likely that the character told me they wanted the story to go differently than I planned. Yes, you read that right. Sometimes the characters have really good ideas and get their way. Other times I ignore them because a single character can be very selfish. I have to consider the entire story.
