Tell us about The Young Guardians and the Genesis Spell.
This book revolves around a group of teenagers who acquire superhuman powers after a chance encounter with the last high elf. Now they don the mantle of superheroes while being hunted by a vengeful cyborg. In addition to the classical superhero elements, this book will present the reader with human aspects such as revenge, redemption, and coming of age.
What initially inspired you to write The Young Guardians and the Genesis Spell?
My best friends and I dreamed of being superheroes when we were in elementary school, but for obvious reasons we could not make that dream a reality. Therefore, I decided to take matters into my own hands by manifesting that dream into a book for the world to see. I interviewed my friends and what powers they would want to have if they were superheroes and I incorporated that into my book.
Tell us little about the characters in The Young Guardians and the Genesis Spell.
Patrick Donovan is the unofficial leader of the group and he has a lot of demons that he struggles with to this day. Tinisha Dolaira is the last high elf and the source of the Young Guardians’ powers. Joshua Rauje is the hothead of the team and can be a reckless loose cannon. Derek Marvin is the brains of the outfit, but his intelligence has made him somewhat demeaning and cynical. Gregory Kennedy is the heart and soul of the group because when the group seems to fall apart he was there to bring them together. Cyber Shadow is a cyborg supervillain who holds a powerful grudge against the Young Guardians and seeks to kill them all.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The hardest part of writing the book would have to be envisioning the potential hardships of being a cyborg, which I tried to depict while writing Cyber Shadow’s point of view.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
My favorite part to write would have to be the Young Guardians’ battle against Cyber Shadow because it was full of action, emotion, and overcoming seemingly impossible odds.
What are your future project(s)?
I am currently writing a fantasy book that revolves around a young man who goes on a quest to conquer an entire empire.
Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about this book/series?
In addition to basing characters on my friends, I also based some of the characters on people I know such as my family and godfather. Cyber Shadow, in particular, is based on all of the bullies who tormented me throughout middle and high school. This is my way of getting back at them with a vengeance.
As a writer, Grady P. Brown utilizes his autism to visualize the story taking place inside of his head like a movie. Also, he has a very strong memory, allowing him to store information about his characters and stories in his brain as though it were a computer hard-drive. His superhero series, The Young Guardians, is based on a childhood fantasy he shared with his best friends of becoming superheroes.
He is also a passionate pit bull lover and owns two sweet and loving pit bulls named Wally and Fitch.
