4 stars
Secrets have a tendency to reveal themselves. Grace’s secret is about to do just that. Twenty years ago, she gave up her baby for adoption. She considered her to be a love child but the father, Sam, was in love with another, Dixie. Dixie and Sam were also her best friends and she did not want to ruin that friendship. Now, twenty years later, she has received a letter from her long-lost daughter and she wants to meet her birth parents. Grace is afraid she will ruin her best friends’ marriage when she reveals her secrets. She also fears it could the end of their long friendship. Grace feels she has no choice but to reveal her secret.
Set in Cornwall, the wild setting is perfect for this story of jealousy, betrayal and three friends who realize they really do not know each other as well as they thought. High Hopes is about so much more than just Grace, Dixie and Sam. There are some wonderful secondary characters without whom there would not be a happy ending. Danny is one of the most important of these. He seems to be the one that cuts through everything using wit, and snarky charm. In addition, we travel with Grace into her past, seeing all the mistake she made, revealing how truly imperfect she and all of us truly are. At forty, these three friends realize they still have some growing up to do. With a little help from friends, they learn to accept the past. Once they all do that; the future seems brighter.
High Hopes offer so much more than just a story. With an intricate plot that unfolds gradually and more than a few surprises to keep us turning the pages, Sue Lilley has also included sensuality that touches the soul, secret feelings that should not be secret, misunderstandings that make for erroneous conclusions and love with enough second chances to make everyone happy. Pick up High Hopes and find some High Hopes for yourself.
