Rocking Racers #2
No Place To Hide!
What happens when the one person you truly hate is the one person who really sees you?
After McKnley Rhodes’s family fell apart, she struck out at Cole Matthews, her then best friend. Over twenty years later, she’s never forgotten the hurt she endured or the hate for the boy she believed caused it.
Cole Matthews hasn’t seen his childhood friend, McKnley Rhodes, for twenty-two years, and what he finds shocks him. She’s tired and beaten down, and he wants to fix that, just as he used to when they were kids. Cole’s the only one who can see she’s putting on an act by embracing her rock star persona. His new goal is to determine why and put an end to her torment.
Will McKnley let him in or will he leave her with no place to hide?

Q & A with Megan Lowe about No Place to Hide!
Tell us about No Place to Hide.
No Place to Hide is book two of my Rocking Racers series and is Cole and McKnley (no that’s not a typo) story. They’re mentioned briefly in Breaking the Cycle.
Cole is a friend of the Ryans and has just been signed to Ryan Racing. A long time ago he lived next door to McKnley and they were best friends. Things happen and she was led to believe Cole ruined her family. She kept that hate alive for a long time until her and Cole reunite. He’s always had a crush on her and sees this as his opportunity to try his luck. No Place to Hide is their story.
What initially inspired you to write No Place to Hide?
I wanted to write a rockstar book. At university I studied popular music and it’s a huge part of my life so I wanted one of my books to reflect that. I also went to see Halestorm in concert and Lzzy Hale blew me away. She’s amazing and I knew I wanted to translate what I saw on that stage into one of my characters.
Tell us little about the characters No Place to Hide.
They’ve both been majorly scarred by their parents. Really, they did numbers on their kids. McKnley’s mum Helen more so than Cole’s dad, but either way they are terrible parents lol.
McKnley puts on a front. She has to, she’s a rockstar who lives her life in the public eye, tabloids following her every move. So outwardly she’s this fierce rock chick who takes no shit, but when you break it down, she’s lonely and she desperately wants to be free.
Cole is lonely. He grew up, after he lost touch with Knley, basically all alone. He’s best friends with Reed Ryan (from Breaking the Cycle) so he got to see how the Ryans are as a family and he desperately wants that but his father wants success and glory. He always wondered what happened to McKnley and when they meet again he sees through the mask she wears for the public and wants to free her.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The hardest part of writing this book was the fact that Cole and Knley were constantly surprising me with things they did. I never really knew where they were going to take me next.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
My favourite part to write were Frank’s parts. You meet him in the middle of the book. He was a complete surprise to me and took on a life of his own. Literally. He was only meant to be a passing character but wrote himself into a bigger role, which is something he totally would do. But I love him and I love who Knley is when she’s with him.
What are your future project(s)?
I just finished book three, which is Mav’s book. It’s called Breaking Away. I have also started work on book four, which is Jax’s. In addition to that I’m working on a m/m book for a collection my publisher is putting together.
Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about this book/series?
Just that there is more coming, obviously! And I hope they enjoy it as much as they enjoyed Breaking the Cycle and if they do, or even if they don’t, to please leave a review!!
Now an exciting excerpt from No Place to Hide!
Cole
Twenty-two years ago
I hear her before I see her. She’s hiding, waiting for me to get close before she runs away again. It might annoy some people, but I don’t mind. I’ll chase after McKinley forever if she’ll let me. I round the corner just in time to see her turn, her black hair streaming behind her. Her bare feet slap against the cement before she scampers up the mango tree in her front yard.
“Come on, Cole,” she yells, already three quarters of the way to the top.
By the time I start to climb, she’s already in her favourite spot right at the top where the branches are new. I thought she might be scared to go that high, but she isn’t. She told me once that she wished she could go right to where the branches end and the leaves are. I told her that was silly, that she’d fall, but she just shrugged.
I finally manage to get to my spot, as close to her as possible. A breeze rustles the leaves and the sun breaks through right where Kinley is and makes her look like an angel. Dad says I’m stupid to be spending so much time chasing after one girl, that I shouldn’t bother because when I’m older I can have as many as I want, but I don’t want anyone else. The breeze blows again, this time bringing voices. Angry voices.
“My mum and dad are fighting again,” Kinley says, hugging her knees to her chest. They do this a lot and I know it makes her sad.
“Come on,” I say, holding a hand out to her, “let’s go ride our bikes for a bit.” I don’t like when she’s sad, and I know riding my bike makes me happy, so maybe it will work for her too. We like to go over to the park; there’s a big hill there and I go down it really fast. The other kids in the neighbourhood don’t like it; only Kinley goes down with me.
We ride around for ages and she doesn’t seem sad anymore, which makes me glad. I wish I could make it so she were never sad again. It’s almost dark by the time we go home.
“Thanks, Cole,” she says as we walk up her driveway.
“It’s okay. I don’t like it when you’re sad.” She hugs me and kisses me on the cheek before she runs into her house. I know I have a goofy smile on my face as I walk to my own house, but I don’t care. The smile is quickly wiped away, however, when I get inside and see the house is empty. All my stuff is gone.
Megan Lowe is a lost journalism graduate who after many painful years searching for a job in that field, decided if she couldn’t write news stories, she would start listening to the characters whispering stories to her and decided to write them down. She writes primarily New Adult/Contemporary Romance stories with Sport and Music themes. She is based on the Gold Coast but her heart belongs to New York City. When she’s not writing she’s either curled up with a good book, travelling or screaming at the TV willing her sporting teams to pull out the win.

DeleteIt's lovely how a minor character 'Frank' developed into so much more.
ReplyDeleteI think the one person in my life who really "sees" me is my dad.
