Excerpt:

When the sound of the shot came, disrupting the sunny pond and meadow with a sharp crack, Kyle leapt to his feet in a single fluid motion knowing immediately what the sound was, and ran the short distance from the far side of the pond to Lady Grace in one breathless moment.  He looked into the distant woods behind, the only direction from which the shot could have originated.  No movement, just a shine near the floor of the woods which could only be explained by the presence of a person.  A gleam of metal meant a gun, likely a rifle at this distance.  Someone was watching and targeting her.

Get down!” he yelled, and just as another shot was fired, Kyle leapt towards Lady Grace and knocked her down, rolling as they fell to take the weight of the fall on his right shoulder.  He didn’t give her time to react, covering most of her body as he continued to roll them over and over.  He brought them to a rest under a stand of willows near the edge of the pond.  The draping branches of the willow gave them some cover, but Kyle knew that if the gunman was determined, and a good shot, they would still be in danger.
