Debra Doxer!

Author of Breaking SkinPlay of LightCandy Series,
and Remedy Series

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m first and foremost the mom of a precocious, energetic six year old. I’m very close with my extended family who all live nearby, just outside of Boston. I love the Red Sox and the Patriots. Once upon a time, in another life, I worked in the film industry in Los Angeles as a PA for an Academy award winning producer, which means I answered lots of phone calls, but sometimes the people on the other end of the phone were celebrities, like Charlie Sheen. Fun fact, Charlie Sheen likes to throw big words into conversations that he doesn’t think you’ll know. But he could never stump me. Words are my thing.

What do you do when you are not writing?
Nothing too exciting. Mostly house chores and stuff for my daughter. Of course, there’s my other career. I have a full-time job in the high tech world.

Do you write full-time or part-time?Part-time - see previous answer.

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I started writing in college and finished my first book when I was twenty-four, which let’s just say was a while ago.

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
Different. The one thing everyone says about my books is that they’re different. Although I don’t see how. The words come out the way they come out. I’m not sure why they’re so different.

What books/authors have influenced your writing?
Stephen King is one of my favorite authors, but my all-time favorite book is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I’ve probably read it twenty times. I also love Laura Howard and Judith McNaught. I think whoever I’m reading at the time is influencing me. Every book I’ve read has influenced me in some way.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?
What bad reviews?? Kidding. I don’t take either to heart. I just do my thing and try not to get too high off the good ones or too low off the bad ones.

What is you next project!
I’m working on a third book in the Remedy series.

When you are in writer mode, music or no music? If music do you have a playlist?
No music. I need complete quiet. I listen before I write and get inspiration from all kinds of music.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?
Not really. Sometimes I don’t feel like writing, but once I make up my mind to get working, the words are there.

What is best writing advice you can give to someone who is beginning in the writing world or thinking about it.To write the book first, using lots of beta readers and being open to feedback. Once you have something you’re proud of and confident about, approach bloggers in a polite and respectful way. If the book is really great, it’s amazing how fast word will spread.

Fun with my "foster baby" Debra Doxer

If you had a superpower, what would it be?
The power Raielle has to heal in the Remedy books.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven't been before?
Tahiti

If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be?
I hate zoos because I hate seeing animals in cages. I have to abstain here. I wouldn’t want to be in a zoo and I wish no animals were in zoos.

If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? (can't ask for more wishes)
That my loved ones would always be happy and healthy. I have to throw in the predictable win the lottery one since college tuition will be close to a million dollars by the time my daughter gets there. World peace would be nice.

If you could go to the past or future, where would you stay and why?
I’d want to go into the future and see my daughter.

What was your favorite decade? (50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, etc.)
The 80’s was my decade, and if you ride in the car with me, you’ll hear a lot of Kate Bush, The Cure, and Morrissey.

If you can be a Disney character, who would you be and why?
Cinderella, the original cinderella story, and the girl so many romance stories are modeled after.

If you could meet anyone from history, who would you meet and why?
Jane Austen because she’s Jane Austen.
