Q & A with Carolyn Arnold
How did you start your writing career?
I started writing poetry and romance novellas as a teenager and thought it would be terrific to write a full-length novel. When I was a teenager, I even wrote into Harlequin for their submission guidelines without my parents knowing. I remember hunkering down in the basement reading them. But it wasn’t until many years later—after being away from writing for thirteen years—that I was reunited with my passion for writing and completed my first novel.
What is the hardest part of writing your books?
I love the writing part and even the editing process, but I’d have to say that the later takes a lot more focus, dedication, and hard work. You definitely have to be committed to a project to pay good money for editors and to read and rewrite a manuscript so many times that you lose count.
You’ve just become President. What’s first on your agenda?
Well, before I could reach the White House, I’d have to become an American! LOL
What do you think makes a good story?
Strong characters, strong plot, strong pacing, and strong research. If any of these areas are lacking, the story is hard to stick with reading, in my opinion.
Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?
I’ve listened to anything from classical to classic rock depending on the scene I’m writing, but for the most part, I prefer to write in silence.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I had a police ride-along and spent most of it with a dead body!
