Three Things I Learned in Three Major Cities
New York, NY - I was fresh out of law school, green as can be on the job and resting my weary head each night in a studio apartment in Midtown.
1. Life is too short, yes, but it can be too long too. One might think this if you ever find yourself in a windowless conference room, looking at the partners across from you, on the other side of the shiny mahogany table, and you think to yourself "I can't do this for another thirty years."
2. You should be loved just as you are. Bridget Jones is right. Just as we are.
3. You're tougher than you think. If you're a true New Yorker, you can withstand whatever that smell is coming from the subway car or the grate on 42nd street or the entire block on garbage day. Cover your nose, hold your head up high and keep on walking. Olfactory assaults and a litany of other indignities are sometimes the price we pay for living on an island with no palm trees, the most exciting island in the world.
3. You're tougher than you think. If you're a true New Yorker, you can withstand whatever that smell is coming from the subway car or the grate on 42nd street or the entire block on garbage day. Cover your nose, hold your head up high and keep on walking. 1. It's OK if you don't feel the pull to do the things that everyone else seems to want to do. Like having children. It's your life, your script, your own personal screenplay. Write a good one and make it true to you. If people don't understand it, well, you can still let them in to view the movie or you can raise the price of admission.
2. "Foul-weather friends" should be as common a phrase as "fair-weather friends." Notice the people who are happy for you when things go your way. Keep those ones around.
3. You're even tougher than you thought you were. Wind, sleet, hail, snow, a cold so bitter that the polar bear at the zoo had to be brought inside. Bring it, bitches! Cover your whole body (with slits for eyes, nose and mouth), hold your head up high and keep on walking. It's a small price to pay to live in one of, if not the most, beautiful city in the country.

1. Go for it. All of the cliches are right. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. One day, there will be no more time left to do all the things you wanted to do.
2. It feels great to find your weirdos. The ones who think it's fantastic that you're working on that book/screenplay/art project/business venture and support you and can't wait to tell you about their book/screenplay/art project/business venture.
3. Stop and feel the sway of the palm trees. Literally and figuratively. Smell some roses too.
