Even the people closest to you can be monsters.

It happened like this: Screaming...A knife...Blood.

Maggie Martin is plagued by nightmares.

This hasn't always been the case. She used to be your typical 17-year-old, worrying about boyfriends and college applications.

Until, one night, when she wakes up to the sound of screaming and witnesses the unthinkable. Now she's scrambling to put the pieces of her life back together, which is not as easy as everyone would like her to believe.

Especially when she's struggling just to BREATHE.

Sam is intrigued by the quiet, new girl from the moment he lays eyes on her. Out of sheer boredom, he decides to include her in his circle of friends, then he's surprised by how much he starts to care about her.

Sam doesn't understand why Maggie won't let him get close to her...until he stumbles across her secret.

The question remains, who can she trust in a sea of strangers?

Tell us about My Life As I Knew It.

My Life As I Knew It is a YA novel about a girl who witnesses her mother’s murder by someone she thought she could trust. Devastated and betrayed by someone she loved, she decides to go live with her biological father--in part to hide from the killer. She meets a new group of friends, she falls in love, but the threat of the killer coming for her casts a shadow over her life. Filled with touching, as well as funny moments, it shows how difficult it can be to move on after such a loss.

What initially inspired you to write My Life As I Knew It?

I wanted to explore what would someone do if they’re betrayed by someone they trusted. How would do a person cope with something like that. So the idea of this book was born.

Tell us little about the characters in My Life As I Knew It.

Maggie, our protagonist, is a 17-year-old girl, whose life is turned upside down after her mother’s death.

Sam, the love interest is an aspiring writer, and one of the funniest characters I’ve written. He is fascinated by Maggie from the beginning. Watching her start to trust him and fall for him was very exciting for me. My goal was to introduce a group of characters anyone would want to be friends with (if they weren’t fictional characters!). From the few comments I got, I hope I’ve succeeded.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
The hardest part was getting all the police protocols correct during an investigation. Figuring out the motives and mindset of the killer was no cake-walk either!

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

Any scene with Sam. He has such a bizarre sense of humor, I found myself grinning whenever he came onto the page. Having those funny moments was crucial for me to show that life can be good again after going through something as horrific as what Maggie went through.

What are your future project(s)?
I’m currently editing a Contemporary Romance set in college. Hopefully it will be available before the end of the year.
