Q & A with Tabi Slick about Tompkin's School!
Tompkin’s School: For The Extraordinarily Talented is a story about the twins, Izara and Kain Torvik, who are sent to Oklahoma to attend Tompkin’s Academy during their Sophomore year of high-school. At first everything is normal, they make friends, join groups, and sneak out to crazy parties like ordinary teenagers. Then the Full Moon comes and they discover their dark powers. Suddenly, something evil takes over them and transforms their desires to thirst for one thing, the blood of their victims’ hearts. Will they be able to control the darkness within them? Will they unlock the secrets into Tompkin’s Academy’s most disturbing history? Or will their inner demons win the battle?
What initially inspired you to write Tompkin's School (For The Extraordinarily Talented)?
In college I had a dream about these twins that were human, but seemed to have these powers on the Full Moon with huge black wings, claws, and red eyes. It was after that dream that I started writing in my journal and building these stories about the twins and how they came to have this power. It was a very different story than what it is today, but I guess that's just how the evolution of writing works.
I wasn't sure if I would write it as a book or if I would just keep it in my journal. I finally decided to make it into a book and used the title of an unfinished story that I had created as a teenager.
Tell us a little about the characters in this book.
The twins Izara and Kain Torvik are the two main characters. They were born in Scarsdale, New York which is a suburban area close to New York City. Izara (she goes by Izzy for short) enjoys hanging out with friends and, of course, being in the drama club. She is outgoing, loyal, and compassionate. Kain is, in some ways, very much like Izzy. However, he is definitely not extraverted like his sister is. He prefers to keep to himself and listen to music. He plays basketball, which, according to Izara, helps him focus his temperamental disposition. He has a strong sense of what is right and will stand up for those he believes to be wronged.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Although a necessary part of writing, rewriting was definitely difficult for me. It was like ripping off a bandaid. But once I did it made it so much easier to move forward in the story. Sometimes rewriting is the hardest thing a writer will ever have to do, but when it’s done it can make the rest of your writing adventure a breeze.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I really enjoyed writing the final Chapter titled “Something’s Coming” because I think it showcases just how powerful Izara is. More so than I think we ever experience before. Throughout the book I have little bits of time travel, but nothing quite like this and I think readers are in for a real treat. I hope I haven’t said too much, but this chapter was the funnest one to write and it was definitely the most intense one for me.
What are your future project(s)?
I am working on the second Tompkin’s School book which I plan on releasing sometime next year. It is the second to last novel in the Tompkin’s School Trilogy and from there we shall see what happens. I do have a few ideas up my sleeve for novels beyond Tompkin’s School so stay tuned for that.
Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about this book/series?
What is something unique about your book that they may not know?
Other than the school, the places in this novel really do exist. Everything from Collings Castle, Las Casadas Mexican Restaurant, to the Arbuckle Mountains are all real and you can go visit them today. The little town of Davis, Oklahoma is where I went to high school and holds a very special place in my heart. I couldn’t have written this story anywhere else.
Now an exciting excerpt from Tompkin's School!
“I’m a monster,” I hissed. My eyes flashed up to meet my reflection once again and soon my clawed hands were the least of my worries. Two black, very large things were moving ever so slightly, blocking the reflection of the rest of the room. I looked over my shoulder to find large, black feathered, wings…
Tabi Slick was born in Chanute, Kansas, and grew up in the country where she was home-schooled for the greater part of her childhood. In middle school, her family moved to Davis Oklahoma where she attended public school for several years. Here she began her writing adventure and soon the world of Tompkin's Academy came to life. After graduating from high school in 2008, she spent a few years in Puerto Rico and wound up in Texas where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington. She was born with an immense appreciation for literature and continues to dedicate her time to her passion of writing.
