Q & A with S. J. Pajonas
What books/authors have influenced your writing?
I gather inspiration for a my books and my writing from a multitude of areas. I love to glean ideas from TV and movies, but I also get inspiration from books. But the biggest influence on my writing has come from my background is screenwriter. Screenwriting was my initial passion before I started writing novels. I learned about three-act structure and what it takes to move the story along. All those screenwriting methods have helped me become a better writer! I like to write slower paced novels that focus on characters, and so Margaret Atwood, Haruki Murakami, and Frank Herbert have all been very influential.
Tell us something you hate doing. Why?
I hate doing laundry. LOL. It's true I'm horrible at it. I've ruined so many clothes, even when I was trying to be careful, that I gave up about two years ago. My husband does the laundry now, and I make sure it all gets put away. I'm also in charge of going through my children's clothing and donating clothes they no longer fit into. I dread doing it every season but I try to make it fun by listening to audiobooks or podcasts while digging through their drawers.
What's your pet peeve?
I'm only supposed to choose one pet peeve? I have plenty of them! Most of my pet peeves now revolve around my children. LOL I wish they would just stop dropping their toys, socks, anything on the floor and walking away. Maybe what we need is a dog who will come along and eat their things! But I would probably be the one who has to clean up after the dog after it ate something it wasn't supposed to. I think my biggest pet peeve is clutter. I can't deal with clutter. Clutter makes my head explode, and I can't concentrate. So my house is cleaner than most people, and I'm constantly wrangling clutter. But that's what has to happen in order for me to be creative.
When you are in writer mode, music or no music? If music do you have a playlist
When I'm in writing mode, I almost always listen to music. I mainly listen to ambient, electronica, or downtempo music, the kind of music without lyrics. I have a few Internet radio stations that I listen to (I'm listening to one right now) and I also have a few playlists set up on my computer for when I don't have Wi-Fi access. I find that the music helps me concentrate, and it rarely ever distracts me.
Who was your favorite hero/heroine.
I believe my all-time favorite hero is Paul Atreides from Dune by Frank Herbert. The more I read those books the more I loved Paul. Alternately, I also have a lot of respect and still love Princess Irulan from those books. She was a pawn in other people's games, but she was also strong enough to make her own decisions. She was caught between a rock and a hard place, and I could sympathize with everything she went through. I also really loved Katniss from the Hunger Games books. Maybe I really love those heroines who are stuck doing other people's biddings, and I love to see what they do in their situations.
Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different.
In general, I know my characters well before I start writing. I do character workups based on astrology, and they give me a good idea of how they will react in certain situations. I also do a fair amount of plotting before I start a book. There are rare occasions when I make a significant change somewhere in the second act of the book the leads me in a different direction, mainly because I get a better idea for the story. But I like to think of myself as having some control over my work, and though I love spending time with my characters and getting to know them, I ultimately tell them what to do. So few things in my life are within my control, so I try to make writing my stories one of them.
What’s you next project?
I have a few new projects lined up for the coming months. My first one is a nonfiction project for a book I plan to release later on this year. Then I would like to write the third book in my cozy mystery series, the Miso Cozy Mysteries. After that, I have two ideas for two brand-new series, one paranormal romance and the other another science-fiction series. I also have one more short story in my magical realism series to publish. Basically I have a lot of ideas and a lot of writing to do.
What's the one thing, you can't live without?
Rice. I cannot live without rice. I need to eat rice a couple of times a week to feel happy.
What is your favorite movie (song)?
I'm not sure I have a favorite movie. I'm pretty sure I have a good top 10 list worth of movies I could say are among my favorites. My favorite song is No One Will Ever Love You by The Magnetic Fields.
What's your favorite TV show of all time and why?
This is another one because there are so many that I love and could watch over and over again. But when I think of TV shows that have stuck with me or even influenced my writing now, I would have to say that LOST is in the number one position. I love good characters and that show was full of them. I also love good mysteries and that show had them as well. I have thought about going back and watching all the episodes again, but I know that would be a serious commitment. LOL. Still, I think about that show all the time.
If you could write in another genre what would it be & why?
I actually love to genre hop, which is a bad thing for my career but a good thing for my imagination. So far, I've written in science fiction, contemporary romance, magical realism, and mysteries. I would like to write in science fiction again and I also have ideas for paranormal romances. I've considered writing time travel, alternate history, and steampunk! But through all my books, I still write about Japan. Japan is my first love. It's the reason why I'm writing in the first place. So whatever I do, whatever genre I write, you always find the thread of Japan throughout my books.
