Exclusive Excerpt:

Nadia awoke with a start.  She was sitting up in her bed, feeling the cold move through her white night clothes. She breathed in, hearing only the sound of her breath like the wind.   It must have been midnight.   The window had been opened, the shutter shifted slightly in the wind, and now she could see him, standing by the window, waiting for her.

He was dressed in silvery metal which covered his torso, upper arms and thighs.    His hair shone the lightest wavy brown, and his skin was powder white.  Underneath, he wore linen of deep magenta, and though he had not moved, she thought that he beckoned her with his thoughts.

He had.  She heard a voice, but it was more like an echo in her mind.

Arise  ~

When she looked at his eyes for an explanation, she turned away quickly, for they glowed white and strange like the moon.  Like searchlights, they knew her, spoke to her, and waited for her to rise.  She felt suddenly challenged, as if her prayer had been answered.

Who was he?  Nadia peeked over the bed, staring at his feet, which were encased in silver boots with tiny wheels.  He hovered over the floor, and now he held his white hand out to her.   She hid behind her hair, which had come undone from all its braids, afraid to take his hand.

She reached out her hand, fascinated, to touch the plate of his back.   And before knowing it, they were outside, in the cool night air, hovering over her open window, shutter in view, then moving, rising above the cabin and through the night air.   She felt her fingertips attached to the metal like a magnet.  It was charged, cold and hot at the same time, but it did not hurt her.   She saw her bare feet dangling below, the ruffle of her night pants around her calves, and the man’s wheels under his feet which turned swiftly and created an almost inaudible whirling sound of movement.  His hair blew slightly in the wind while Nadia pulled hers close around her.

It was hard to tell if the green grass and glints of the town were lit by the moon or by the man’s eyes, so bright was the radiance coming from his gaze.   She felt light, suddenly ethereal and free.

The night sky was black, littered with tiny gleams of stars so numerous that they did not look real.  They seemed close, touchable, but then far away when they blinked in places one would not expect them to.  They traveled past the town, further and higher in the air, further than Nadia had ever traveled.   She did not know the expanse of the world and where they were going, and for a moment, was afraid. Georgeonus turned his head, as if he had heard her thoughts, as if reading her mind.  Perhaps her prayer had been granted.

She didn’t know where she was going, but she knew she could not turn back.

So now, Ria must forgo her selfish desires to compartmentalize her life, but what's she to do when she can't save everyone she wants to? One girl may not be capable of taking down an empire. Good thing Ria's got help.

Excerpt:

We played party games. Ari and I taught the boys, even Mark, how to play Drug Dealer, a social card game where each player drew a card and a role: the drug dealer, the cop, and the buyers. The dealer had to wink at the buyers and sell to them all before the cop caught him. Wink at the wrong person or the wrong time, and the cop would bust you. Ari and I loved to play it at parties with the girls and even some of the guys. Although when we played with guys, people got distracted quickly, which meant it fell apart.

Surprisingly, Mark played a good cop and Brad a good dealer. Even more surprising, Mindless sucked at the game. Maybe he’d gotten too high for it.

After our seventh run at the game with an average of twenty minutes a round, I threw down my jack—making me the dealer—when Mark busted me. “I need more cake.”

All of the other food disappeared long ago, most of it gone directly after Mark emerged from his room. I ate my fourth slice as the boys dealt another round, and Ari sauntered my way, her touch lingering across her wolf’s shoulders.

“I’ve got something special for you, but I didn’t want to give it to you in front of the boys.” A small envelope slipped into my hands, and curiosity dug her tiny nails into my nerves. I tore it open and pulled out a pale green card.

The front read ástin mín.

My fingers shook as I flipped the card.

On the back she’d printed my love.

Ari translated Boden’s nickname for me: something so simple, yet she did this to me every time.

I grabbed hold of her, hugging her a bit harder than I should have, but she didn’t tap out. “Happy un-birthday, baby doll.”

“Is it gift time?” Oliver joined us, bottle of wine in hand. As many as he had, he didn’t show it. Handsome as always, he wore thick-rimmed glasses today, accentuating his prominent Greek nose. Were they just for show or did he normally wear contacts?

“I didn’t want to make anyone else feel bad if they didn’t get her anything. You know how kind and selfless I am.” Ari kept her face straight for another few seconds before her smile broke.

“Well, Chris and I have a gift for our vampire friend. Something we’ve had for a long time but didn’t know what to do with.” He presented me a long, flat, blue box wrapped in a wide, white ribbon.

My pulse jumped. I didn’t expect anything, even after Ari announced the un-birthday party in my honor. I slid the ribbon off the corner and pooled it on the small table. The top came off with a silent puff, opening to white tissue paper and a glittery, iridescent feather the length of my forearm. Tuffs bloomed around the bottom, silver and gold, gradually darkening as the feathers reached for the tip of the vane, which was a saturated royal red. My fingers brushed the hollow shaft, and energy zapped me.

“I suppose we were merely keeping it until its rightful owner showed up.”

With a growing realization that their continued existence bestows upon them a debt to humanity, the survivors look to create a cure for the insanity that has brought civilization to its knees. Tensions amongst the vampires are escalating, jeopardizing the very existence of the clan itself. A battle for supremacy seems inevitable and their future is in the balance. How far will Farzin go to achieve his aims - domination of the vampires and humans alike? And how terrible will his vengeance be against any who stand in his path? Antony

Author Bio:

“Once Bitten, Twice Die” is the debut novel from Antony J. Stanton. The book is the first of ‘The Blood of the Infected’ series, in the ‘post-apocalyptic action thriller’ genre. Stanton was born in London in 1970. Even as a child he always dreamed of becoming a published author, and he started to write a book. But, having watched the film ‘Top Gun,’ he was swayed into a becoming a military pilot. After no more than a glancing blow of a career in the British Royal Air Force he decided that his long term future lay elsewhere and he became a commercial pilot and remains thus to this day. Hence much of this trilogy was written all around the world, generally at unsociable times when jet-lag meant that normal people were asleep.

During a holiday with three friends, a bet was made amongst them. Each had a task to fulfil within the year – Stanton’s was to write a book. A little late, but five years on and his challenge has been completed. Three times.

His period spent in the RAF helped him write the military survival aspects of this book, and a kidnapping incident in Kazakhstan and shooting in Ghana, amongst other ‘adventures’, provided him with a dark well of experience to draw from. Life is, after all, one big adventure. A combination of the aforementioned, along with his love of the darker sides of literature, and the results are this novel and the next two in the trilogy.

And all it took was the impetus of a friendly challenge to spur him on to his creative dream… He still lives in South London and is very much looking forward to watching his friend fulfilling his part of the challenge: demonstrating his (not-so) newly acquired break-dancing skills, surely a sight to behold

Excerpt:

I can’t sleep. It’s nothing out of the ordinary. My mind has raced since I was a kid. While I probably should be accustomed to it by now, I’m not used to it: At all. Worry. Worry. Worry. Stop. Worry some more.  Then stutter, so I can worry about that too. Why not?
It’s like the ringing in my ears. That won’t stop either, and it drives me crazy. Although I sleep with a fan, it doesn’t help much. It merely mocks me, blowing dust around the room and forcing me to pull the covers tighter, the way I do with my Things’ bandages for wounds. (Not that I hurt them all that often anymore, I’m a nice guy lately).
Don’t mistake nice for not callous, or, maybe more like sentimental. Some people count sheep. I count their screams. If it wasn’t so darn cold out, I’d go back to visit my Things. I like checking up on them, seeing how they’ve changed. Sometimes I bring a bag of make-up. I fix them up the best I can. You see, I’m not all evil either. Wait. I said that already. I can’t really explain it, you see. It’s complicated. There’s one good way to describe it: I’m a collector. Because of that, I mostly take good care of my Things. Whatever. I don’t owe anyone explanations.
Back to the screams. I lost count at forty-seven on the last of my Things. Forty-seven bellows, pleas, and “Mister, why are you doing this to me’s?” Forty-seven blissful moments of feeling, no, knowing, I was God. Go ahead, roll your eyes, give me a dirty look. It doesn’t matter what you think of me. Until you’ve killed, you can’t possibly understand. You can’t know. Not until you’ve become an accumulator and taken pride in your belongings.
It’s in those final breaths before surrender where I get the high. Submission comes first through their eyes, which bulge and, when I’m lucky, turn red. It’s even contagious. I’m sure mine turn red too, reflective of the panic. In that moment, we’re connected most. If you’ve done it, you know that the terror races through them and into your own hands toward the finish line. It enters your limbs, likely wrapped around their necks if you are anything like me, and doesn’t leave until they are finally dead. I never kill someone from behind. That’s for cowards. I want to see it. I want them to see it coming too, so they know who’s in charge. What good is owning a Thing if it doesn’t know who its master is?
Maybe it was forty-eight. I can’t be sure. The last Thing mumbled at the very end. I can’t decide whether to count it or not. I guess it would depend on what she said. I think it was “help,” so that would count. Right? Do you agree? Answer me. Yet if it was only a grunt, it doesn’t. I really, really need to get some sleep. This is their fault; my Things.
Silly little Things they are. They think so little of me. I should be used to it. Everyone underestimates me. As if I haven’t prepared for their yammering. As if I don’t have a place where I can do my best work. As if I don’t have routines and a spot. As if they have a chance of escape. As if I haven’t prepared for this my whole life since that bitch in high school thought she was better than me. The one who made Momma laugh and say I was too “pansy” to ever land a girl like that.
Whatever, Momma. Look at you now.
It’s cute, though. The screamers, as much as they annoy me, are also the most fun. There’s something more satisfying about possession after you’ve really earned it. That last one, well, she certainly gave me a run. I’ll have to pick up lipstick—cherry red—for our date this week. I’m a considerate man. I take care of my Things. I told you that already. I don’t think I’d like her so much if she hadn’t screamed. I wish I could be sure how many times it was. It’s really haunting me. I need my rest, though it’s not going to happen until I’ve completed my mental inventory. It’s just something I know about me. Step one in being an effective collector is knowing yourself. It’s as important as keeping track of your Things.
I catalogue everything – journal entries of why I do the things I do, scrapbooks as reminders, and even logs of activities and research. I take this seriously, you see. And numbers, well, sometimes they bother me. Forty-eight is better than forty-seven. I don’t like odd numbers. I don’t like a lot of things. I don’t like Things that think they are better than others. I can’t stand pumpkin latté and I’m never late. Punctuality is the first step of being in control. The wonderful thing about Things is that once you possess them, they can’t ever be late. Better? They have to respect you. And they are fully in your control.
My wife Shelia was always late. Couldn’t even show up to church on time. What kind of woman of God was she? Never trust a ginger. Doesn’t matter now anyway. She’d never have been good enough to be one of my Things. I’m not saying they’re all perfect. My Things come in every shape and size. I’m sure lots of them were like Shelia – loud mouthed, white trash, and big, with lopsided titties. Hell, Thing Ten is the perfect example of that. When I get to her, you’ll hate her too. You’ll thank me for doing what I did. The world’s a better place with her mostly out of it. That one doesn’t get a bag of potato puffs for her head. She’s jammed in a freezer out back, alone, odd, left out… I’m not sure why I even keep her.
Wait. That’s it. That’s why I can’t sleep: Odd numbers.
Currently, I only have fifteen Things. I never sleep right when I’m stuck on an odd number. I hate odd numbers more than pumpkin latte with extra cream. Odd numbers are the worst, especially thirteen. I hate odd numbers even more than I hate Halloween, a holiday for posers.
Some shitty little kid with a sheet over his head and oval cut-out eyes isn’t of any interest to me. Nor are their mothers, who couldn’t be bothered to put together a proper costume. No. Not for me. I prefer to find my Things in much more refined settings, like book clubs, the library, the local university. I like my Things tidy, educated, neat. Sadly, it doesn’t always work that way. My research says it’s because I’m “impulsive.”
Whatever.
Sixteen will feel so much better to me. I look at my nightstand, squinting in the dark to see my alarm clock. Its blue numbers read 3:16. I smile. It’s a sign. I still believe in those, and I don’t believe in a lot of things. Tomorrow is killing time. Tomorrow is my day to collect my sweet sixteen.
I’ll have to dress the other Things up and throw her a party when I get her home. I bet she’ll like that, being the center of attention and all.
I close my eyes and quickly drift off to sleep, dreaming of the gym.

Today we are spotlighting Samantha Cross's
Lunar City!

Enter below for a chance to win a copy of Lunar City from
Samantha Cross!

Book 2 of the Lunar Rampage Series
Lunar City!

With the town barren after a string of werewolf attacks, Cora has packed up her things and moved back home, hoping to put the violent night of loss behind her for good. But when she returns a year later, just for an afternoon, she is gobsmacked with a new mystery: Max, the man she had fallen for, who was cursed with a life of lycanthropy, is now missing. And when a mysterious man in black arrives at her door looking for him, Cora knows he's in danger.

Her search eventually leads her to a city of the werewolves, and the king of all werewolves himself, who is none too pleased to discover she knows exactly who and what they are. She is forced to live in their compound, with an ultimatum: prove you are trustworthy enough to be freed before the next full moon, or suffer the consequences.

Cora's survival depends on this. Unfortunately, there are those within the compound who are eager to see her fail, and will stop at nothing to succeed.

Grab YOUR copy TODAY!

Q & A with Samantha Cross about Lunar City!

Tell us about Lunar City.

This is a sequel to Lunar Rampage, so you must read the first one! It’s been a year since the incidents in Lunar Rampage, and Cora is trying to get back into contact with Max after he’s been cursed by a werewolf bite. She finds him in a place called Lunar City, where he’s taken refuge with other werewolves that are helping him. Problem is, she’s not supposed to know about any of this, and she’s given till the next full moon to prove she’s trustworthy enough to leave the premises...or else.

This one is a lot more action packed, and laced with MAJOR romance.

What initially inspired you to write Lunar City?

My readers for the first one. I wrote LR with a cliffhanger just in case I wanted to do a sequel, but I never anticipated there’d be such a demand for it. I was getting letters every month asking me when I was going to write it. Just about all my feedback was dying to know what happens to Max and Cora next, so this entry is very love heavy.

Tell us little about the characters Lunar City.

There are A LOT of new characters in this entry. We are introduced to werewolf royalty, and they have a compound where they are taking care of other newbie werewolves. It’s an extremely diverse cast I’m proud of. Not only do I enjoy creating colorful characters, but I wanted them to be racially diverse as well.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Realizing that not every book is going to be written so quickly. Lunar Rampage happened over a summer, but Lunar City took a lot longer. It’s a much thicker book, with way more complex storylines and characters, so I wanted to do a good job. It taking longer was just a little frustrating.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

Much like LR, I’d have to say the finale. It’s where everything I’ve been building up to sort of explodes. It happens all over a city and...well, I’m going to keep this spoiler free.

What are your future project(s)?

I’m writing multiple books right now, so it’s more of a race to see which one gets finished first. I’ve got two romances and one post-apocalyptic. And of course, another entry in the Lunar Rampage series.

Now an exciting excerpt from Lunar City!

“I’m not going anywhere,” he announced.

“This isn’t multiple choice. I said leave.”

“No.”

“Max, you said what you wanted to say, now please leave.”

With both hands in his pockets, he smugly shrugged and responded, “I’m not leaving.”

I had had enough and if he wasn’t going to leave on his own accord I was going to have to force him out by own hand. I swaggered straight up to him and shoved my hands against his chest just to see if I could move him at all. Max’s chest was hard as a rock and I could feel the outline of his pecks beneath his white t-shirt. He had gotten much more defined since we had last seen one another, and because of this, it was like trying to punch a boulder.

Realizing I was physically inferior, I swatted at his chest in frustration and growled, “Get out!” I pushed at him a couple more times and internally I was screaming. I looked like some stupid woman from a black and white film, beating against her lover with her wrists like she was too weak and pathetic to put up a real fight. God, how predictable of me.

In a very bored tone, Max asked, “Are you done?”

Just for asking that I slugged him in the arm. “Screw you,” I said under my breath and then turned away and pouted. I was well aware that I sounded like a child.

“Hey, stop,” he said urgently, and then grabbed a hold of me by my arm and jerked me toward his body before I had a chance to run back to the door. He clasped his hand around mine and then placed it flat onto his chest.
I didn’t know what he was doing, and I attempted to escape, but we were mere inches apart from each other and I was being sucked in by his pale blue eyes that were staring down at me.

“You feel that?” he asked. My eyes mustered up the courage to break away from his gaze and I let myself focus on the fast thudding of his heart beneath my touch. It was racing like crazy. “It’s been beating irregularly since the second I walked in here. Would it do that for anyone I supposedly thought low of?”
