Nadia awoke with a start.  She was sitting up in her bed, feeling the cold move through her white night clothes. She breathed in, hearing only the sound of her breath like the wind.   It must have been midnight.   The window had been opened, the shutter shifted slightly in the wind, and now she could see him, standing by the window, waiting for her.

He was dressed in silvery metal which covered his torso, upper arms and thighs.    His hair shone the lightest wavy brown, and his skin was powder white.  Underneath, he wore linen of deep magenta, and though he had not moved, she thought that he beckoned her with his thoughts.

He had.  She heard a voice, but it was more like an echo in her mind.

Arise  ~

When she looked at his eyes for an explanation, she turned away quickly, for they glowed white and strange like the moon.  Like searchlights, they knew her, spoke to her, and waited for her to rise.  She felt suddenly challenged, as if her prayer had been answered.

Who was he?  Nadia peeked over the bed, staring at his feet, which were encased in silver boots with tiny wheels.  He hovered over the floor, and now he held his white hand out to her.   She hid behind her hair, which had come undone from all its braids, afraid to take his hand.

She reached out her hand, fascinated, to touch the plate of his back.   And before knowing it, they were outside, in the cool night air, hovering over her open window, shutter in view, then moving, rising above the cabin and through the night air.   She felt her fingertips attached to the metal like a magnet.  It was charged, cold and hot at the same time, but it did not hurt her.   She saw her bare feet dangling below, the ruffle of her night pants around her calves, and the man’s wheels under his feet which turned swiftly and created an almost inaudible whirling sound of movement.  His hair blew slightly in the wind while Nadia pulled hers close around her.

It was hard to tell if the green grass and glints of the town were lit by the moon or by the man’s eyes, so bright was the radiance coming from his gaze.   She felt light, suddenly ethereal and free.

The night sky was black, littered with tiny gleams of stars so numerous that they did not look real.  They seemed close, touchable, but then far away when they blinked in places one would not expect them to.  They traveled past the town, further and higher in the air, further than Nadia had ever traveled.   She did not know the expanse of the world and where they were going, and for a moment, was afraid. Georgeonus turned his head, as if he had heard her thoughts, as if reading her mind.  Perhaps her prayer had been granted.

She didn’t know where she was going, but she knew she could not turn back.

I breathe in deep through my nose and out through my mouth—an exercise my therapist taught me when I started to feel like I was going to fall apart. I can slowly feel myself start to relax when the doorbell rings.

Sighing, I get up. My housemates must’ve forgotten their keys or be carrying too many bags to unlock the door.

I glance through the window, but no one is there.

Another doorbell ditch?

My blood runs cold as I open the door.

An envelope is sitting on our mat. The world turns mute as the blood rushes to my ears. Bending down, I scoop up the envelope. It’s addressed to Isaac. And it looks like exactly the one that came for Sonny.

No…

I turn it over and pull out the note. My hands are shaking as I read:

YOUR TURN

“Isaac!” rips from my throat.

“What?” he calls from his room down the hall. My voice is trapped in my throat as I look up and down the street. There are still a few folks leaving flowers, looking at the makeshift memorial in front of our house. Did one of them do this? Did one of them see who left the note? I feel so exposed. Vulnerable.

I draw back inside and shut the door, trembling.

Isaac’s footsteps thud from his bedroom into the foyer. “Lylah, what?” His face falls and his eyes widen as he sees what’s in my hand. “Is that another note?”

Nodding, I hand it to him.

“Jesus,” he whispers. “Who was it addressed to?”

I look up at him, my vision blurring with tears. “You.”

What initially inspired you to write Hers To Save?

The start of the tale came to me when I was trying to sleep. So much so that I ended up getting out of bed and finding paper and pen just to empty my mind so I could get some sleep.

Tell us little about the characters in Hers To Save.

Aveline is the main character in the book. Her mother died when she was a young girl and she was left to bring up her younger brother. She lived a life were she had to tiptoe around her father's violent rages and felt alone in the small village where she grew up.

Aeolius is a young dragon. He reminds me of a kitten, but with very sharp claws. He is loyal and fierce, but sometimes his young age shows.

Herveus’ character I fell in love with. He is my very own anti-hero and I think over the course of the story he is the one who grows the most. He is a spy/assassin for Prince Dayton.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

The character Paul is named after my lifelong friend Paul Humprey. He passed away after a long fight with cancer just as I was finishing the third part of the book. I became stuck on the first chapter his character appeared in and it took a long time to get passed the block.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

My favourite parts to write were the interactions between Aeolius and a young boy in the story called Bramwell. Through most of the writing I was dealing with heavy emotions. The scenes between these two characters is light and fun and gave me a break from needing tissues.

What are your future project(s)?

I’m currently working on a fantasy romance called Ice. It is set in world of the fae. This book will not have a HEA.

Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about this book/series?

I wanted the series to be able to be read by young adults as well as an older audience so there is no swearing in the book. There is mild violence, as well as at the beginning of the book physical abuse by Aveline’s father. These scenes are more alluded to than actual written.

Below a shale-grey sky, a brooding stone wall slashes across the landscape. Sweat beads Aveline's forehead as her mind drifts in a veil of darkness. The vivid recollection of damp dungeon walls closes in on her, shackling her mind in the past where fear greets her. Like a guiding light, the soft touch of small fingers interlacing with her own drag her back from the dark fissure. Glancing down into the pasty face of her younger brother, she squeezes his hand. Crowded close together for warmth, slick-footed they thread their way through a massive set of wrought iron gates. Bone-white ice crystals lace the ground—left behind as a sparkling gift by the chilling winter’s breath. The sharp wind bites into her frozen cheeks. Reaching up, Aveline pulls the squirrel fur-lined hood tighter against her face.
A deathlike quietude haunts the city’s narrow streets, not a soul moves or murmurs. As if a canvas painted maroon by the violent brush-stroke of a painter’s brush, the cobble-stoned thoroughfare depicts the voiceless memories of violence. Many doors hang from limp hinges and the sunlight reflects off fractured and jagged glass windows. Pears, rotten and trodden lie scattered across the pathway, their sweet, rancid stench permeating the air. A flash of colour out of place against the sparkling ground catches Aveline's attention. Dropping to her knees, coldness seeps through her leggings as she reaches forward with trembling hands and clutches a hold of a tiny shoe. Rubbing her thumb over the soft egg-blue material she tries to wipe away the speckles of crimson. Chin trembling, she tightens her fist around the discarded object and glances around. On the other side of the street rests a cart tipped on its side, underneath, attached to a matching shoe, a small leg sticks out. Scrambling to her feet, she sprints across the road. Pushing against the spokes of a large wheel, the cart rocks up a fingers width. Feet slipping in a gloop of pear mulch, she loses traction and the vehicle thuds back to the ground. Leaning forward, splinters of wood dig into her flesh and with gritted teeth she pushes again. A pair of masculine hands appear beside her own, and with a loud groan the cart topples over.
Exposed to the elements, the girls bruise mottled limbs twist at odd angles. Her delicate frame, covered in an embroidered fuchsia pink gown, lies unmoving. With cherub cheeks lacking a flush of colour and a face as pale as a harvest moon, Aveline can tell the small child has already been visited by the angel of death. Suffocating with each stuttering breath, an avalanche of anguish bleeds from Aveline's eyes, distorting her vision. Tilting his upper body to the side, Herveus rests his head against Aveline's own. “We'll bury her before we leave. I promise you.”

Michelle Connor had her first poems published when she was fifteen years old. Her writing was put on the back burner as she became a mother of three and a parent to a cat, dog, and a husband.

As well as writing, she has a love for anything artistic, from painting to photography. She enjoys the freedom that artwork gives hers. The chance to escape into the world of her characters or into a painting, bringing imaginary people to life from a blank canvas.

Reading books is one of her great passions and she devours books as if they were actual substance. When her head is not in a book she can usually be found spending time with her family or spending hours driving through the countryside.

Tell us about Mystic Princess.

Mystic Princess is the first book of the Mystic Series. It follows a young girl named Cara, who believes she is the last of the Mystics, an ancient race that can control the elements. As she nears her 18th birthday, her powers slowly manifest and secrets from her past come into play. It is with the help of Xavier and Jordan, her fiance and best friend, that she must unlock these secrets to save her future.

What initially inspired you to write Mystic Princess?

Mystic Princess actually came to me one morning while I was driving home from work. At one of my jobs at the time I worked with pregnant and parenting teens. The girls would talk to me about how they loved it when their boyfriends got jealous and how they picked fights on purpose to “spice” up the relationship. It became clear that some girls may have a skewed view of what a healthy vs unhealthy relationship might be. So out of this the main characters were born. If you play close attention I weave in many elements of domestic violence and examples of unhealthy relationships because my hope was that through this book some girls would see that these types of relationships are not okay.

Tell us little about the characters in Mystic Princess.

Cara: She is the main character of the book. She is 18 years old. She is a Mystic, with the power to control the elements. In the beginning of the book she is naive and sheltered, and tends to give in to many of the demands of others. As the book progresses her eyes begin to open and she slowly comes out of her shell and gets a voice of her own.

Xavier: He is the prince of Myridia and Cara’s fiance. Xavier is a complicated character, he is controlling and jealous, but loves Cara to a fault. He does not like Cara’s best friend, Jordan, and suspects that Jordan has feelings for her. Xavier plays a major role in helping Cara discover her powers.

Jordan: He is Cara’s best friend. He works in the palace as a baker. Jordan is Cara’s only friend in the palace outside of Xavier. It is clear from the very beginning that he is in love with Cara, but Cara is oblivious to this.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Describing the fantasy world that I created. Myridia and it’s towns are completely made up so building a world in my head and then putting it onto paper was pretty difficult. It’s funny how things make sense in your head but then you write it and it’s like well that makes no sense! It took a lot of trial and error to get descriptions down and make them sound like what I see in my head.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

The Ending. From the beginning I knew how I was going to end the book. I think it was the first thing I figured out. I knew exactly how it was going to end So when I finally got to write it I was so excited. It all comes together perfectly and exactly how I pictured it.

What are your future project(s)?

I am working on the second book now in the series. This Series is going to be a three book series and will continue to follow Cara on her journey.

Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about this book/series?

Books have always been an escape for me, for as long as I can remember. I love leaving my worries behind and getting lost in a new adventure. There have been so many books that have been there for me and been a light for me in the darkness. One of my biggest goals with writing this series is that I can be that light for someone going through a dark time. I want to help people just as others have helped me.

Prologue

“She will save us all someday.”

The woman looks away from the sprawling city before her and regards her husband and the sleeping child in his arms. “How can you be sure?”

“She is the one.”

The woman’s eyes fill with tears as she contemplates her husband’s words. “The prophecy could be wrong.”

“It’s not. Our child is meant for greatness.”

The woman takes the sleeping child from her husband and kisses her head, careful not to wake her. “So we continue with the plan?”

The husband looks at his loving wife and pulls her and his child into his arms. He holds his world to his chest and imagines their stolen lifetime until they hear a knock on the door.

“I will be with you until the end, my love.” The husband whispers.

“Promise me that she will be safe.”

“She will not be hurt, she is too important.”

They both know that his words are empty but he says them anyway. He cannot promise that their child will not suffer. The husband steps away from his wife as tears fill his eyes. He cannot allow his wife to see his pain; it will only make this harder. The woman places the child in her bassinet and as tears fall down her cheeks she murmurs her goodbyes.

The husband places a hand on his wife’s shoulder. “My love, it is time. We cannot delay any longer.”

The wife nods soundlessly and disappears into the bathroom. The husband looks over the edge

of the bassinet at his sleeping daughter. “My daughter, you are the light of my world. I’m sorry that it has to be this way. Save our people and none of this will be in vain.”

With his parting words, he turns to his wife as she returns and grabs her hand. He brings her hand to his lips and kisses her knuckles. Love and determination reflects in both their eyes and together they walk out the door to meet their fate.

Excerpt:

They continued down the mud track until reaching a junction where three paths met and the Warden Statue stood before them.

“The Monk,” David said as they looked up at it. Over the years the three of them had named all twenty-three statues of Gregson manor, based purely on what the person looked like. While they knew each represented important Gregson family members from different generations, that hadn’t stopped them inventing some of the more childish names such as The Fat Dwarf, Big Butt Betty and Jack’s personal favorite The Constipated General.

The Monk stood on a small pedestal, the total height of the statue being around two meters. He had bare feet, with long flowing robes closed by a rope tied around his waist. His hands were pressed together at chest height as if praying and his shaved head was bowed with eyes closed.

“What do we do now? There’s no blue emerald here that I can see.” Rosie asked, examining the statue from all angles.

“Don’t know, that nutty woman didn’t say.” David replied, referring to the curator. “She did tell us to the bring the book though, maybe that will tell us something.”
Rosie pulled it out, then dropped the bag to the ground and sat on it. She went to the contents page and read down the list until she came to the chapter on the Rear Garden.

She started to read:
The Rear Gardens are situated at the rear of the Gregson Manor…

“Whoever wrote this really spells things out, don’t they? Does it mention that the grass is green and the trees point upwards in a tree like fashion?” David asked sarcastically. “It’s like it’s written by a moron, for morons.”
