An Excerpt from the Book

The young man’s chin stuck out. His back stiffened, his gaze glued to Sam. “You? You’re just a rodeo washout.”
Sam stood his ground. The young man’s narrowed eyes screamed for someone to kick some sense into him, and Sam wanted to be that person. Since he recognised Sam, he was probably a local. Didn’t mean he could act like a jackass.
Affrica ran a hand along his arm, distracting him from his thoughts. “Let’s just go,” she said.
Walking away wasn’t Sam’s style, and he held the guy’s stare, challenging him to make the first move. Please do.
The guy looked away first and leapt into the crowd with his mates. Smart move.
With Sam’s arm still tight around Affrica, they wove past the herd, closing in on a staircase that vanished behind a wall.
Halfway up the steps, he stopped in the shadows, giving them complete isolation. She stood by his side, green eyes dominating her pale face. Behind the wall, the music reverberated, but at that moment, the two of them were all that mattered.
“You all right? Did that jerk hurt you?” His fingers pressed into the soft flesh of her arm and the sensation of her skin against his sent fire blazing through him. He’d intended to simply ask her if she was okay, but his pulse was raging, and being close to Affrica in that moment felt right.
She shook her head. “Yeah, I’m fine. You don’t need to get into fights on my behalf, but thanks.”
Her skin burned beneath his fingertips, messing with his head. It had been a long time since he had been compelled to protect anyone. Yet something about Affrica made him want to guard her. To cover her in cotton wool and keep her safe.
Sam pitched a hand against the wall above her shoulder and inhaled her honeyed fragrance mixed with hints of crisp citrus. What had she done to him? They hadn’t even ordered dinner and already he was contemplating kissing her. Tone it back, man.
The rise and fall of Affrica’s chest quickened, and the fire inside him dove south.
An abrupt cacophony of giggles erupted from farther down the staircase. Sam didn’t glance at the strangers; he couldn’t pull his gaze from Affrica’s parted, glossy lips. He wondered if they tasted as sweet as they looked.
Affrica’s attention was drawn to the people who stomped up the stairs as they passed, a frown capturing her brow. She slipped out from under his arm. “Let’s get going.”
He battled the fumes in his head and stared at the way the fabric of her dress rode up the backs of her thighs, dancing across her butt, teasing him. Girls had always vied for his attention, but he’d never wanted any of them the way he did Affrica. Was it because she wasn’t jumping all over him but playing hard to get? He adjusted his belt buckle and strode up after her, taking two steps at a time.

EskieMama & Dragon Lady Sunday Spotlight w/Giveaway: Geronimo Must Die by J.R. Lindermuth

Sunday Spotlight

Geronimo Must Die
by J.R. Lindermuth

Enter below for a chance to win copy of Geronimo Must Die
by J.R. Lindermuth

Geronimo and rascally half-breed Indian scout Mickey Free have never been friends.

Yet, Mickey has already saved Geronimo's life twice (without acknowledgement) and is the only one who can keep the great Apache leader out of the sniper's sights now. The sniper has already murdered several tribal leaders and Mickey believes it's all a plot to prompt a great runaway from the hated San Carlos reservation.

Mickey's efforts are stymied by Al Sieber, head of scouts, and John Clum, reservation agent, as well as suspicion of other Indians. Adding to his problems, Mickey is in love with a girl whose name he keeps forgetting to ask and who may be allied to the plot.

Only perseverance, risk to his life and, eventually, Geronimo's help will enable Mickey to resolve this dangerous situation.

Tell us about Geronimo Must Die.
The novel takes place in the 1870s on and around the San Carlos reservation in Arizona. Mickey Free, a half-breed Indian scout, discovers a plot to assassinate tribal leaders to prompt a breakaway from the hated reservation. Geronimo is the next target and Mickey is the only one who can save him, despite a lack of assistance from Army and reservation officials. Making the task even more difficult is Mickey’s infatuation with a beautiful Indian maiden who may somehow be involved.

What initially inspired you to write Geronimo Must Die?

History and mystery have always been my inspiration and this story incorporates both.

Tell us little about the characters in Geronimo Must Die.

Mickey, Geronimo, Sieber, Clum and some other characters did exist. Some, including Beauty and the Prophet, are products of my imagination. The horrid conditions at San Carlos did inspire a number of breakouts. Both the real Mickey and Geronimo are fascinating characters in their own right. Various sources as part Irish, Mexican or Indian. His kidnap by a band of Apache did lead to a tragic war. After his service as a scout, he married, fathered a number of children and lived out his days on another reservation.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Every story has its own challenges. The biggest when writing about characters who actually existed is staying within the bounds of possibility and not blundering to the extent of being called out by readers.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

The whole book was fun to write. I think I may have enjoyed writing Chapter 11 best as Mickey gets closer to Dee-zho-ne and visits the Yavapai camp to try and learn more of her history.

What are your future project(s)?

Another Western and the eighth novel in a contemporary mystery series are with publishers. I’m currently working on a ninth in the series.

Chapter 1.
The first shot raised a cloud of dust between our feet. Flinging myself against Geronimo, I knocked him to the ground and covered his body with my own. The second shot struck and crackled into the framework of the wickiup. After a moment of silence and no more shots, Geronimo barked, “Get off me, fool.”
I complied. We rose, surrounded by a crowd of muttering warriors who’d been summoned by the shooting. The rifle fire came from a bluff above the camp and a number of men hurried off in that direction. They wouldn’t find the sniper. Having failed in his mission, I knew he was long gone.
For the second time, I’d saved Geronimo’s life. He seemed no more grateful than he had the first time. Brushing himself off, he inquired if those within the wickiup were unharmed. Assured of the safety of his family, he turned to me. “Why are you here?”
Sieber had sent me. A fool’s mission, though I hadn’t told him so. I learned a long time ago not to argue with Al Sieber.
Dawn on a frosty morning. Steam rising from the coats of the horses in the corrals. The boys watching the horses huddled with their arms clasped around themselves or blowing on their hands for a little warmth. Dry grass crackled underfoot. We were all hoping for an early spring. Winter was never easy at San Carlos and this had been no exception.
Arriving at Geronimo’s wickiup, I coughed loudly in hope those within would acknowledge my presence. It’s not our way to barge into another person’s home without invitation. I waited patiently. The only sound from within a series of grunts and squeals of delight. Geronimo rutting with one of his younger wives.
Another sound attracted my attention. She, the lovely one, had just emerged from the next hut with a water jug in hand. After a quick smile, she lowered her head and set off for the stream. As I watched, the older woman came out and gave me a sour glance which made me avert my gaze from the sweetly swaying rump of the departing younger one.
“The old lady would cut your heart out if she knew what you were thinking,” Geronimo said as he stooped and came out to stand beside me. I could only blush.
For a good twenty years or more--from the time the Mexicans killed his family and set him on a path of vengeance until John Clum brought him in without firing a shot--Geronimo had been the scourge of the West.
Yet, for those seeing him for the first time, Geronimo presents an unimpressive aspect. There is little at first glance to separate him from the average indio. His round face, framed by a mop of dark hair, is sun-ravaged and stern of expression. His dark gimlet eyes are like those of a sidewinder and his mouth is a wide slash turned down at the edges.
Spend a minute in his presence, though, and you'll realize power radiates from this man like heat from a stove. You need to step back to keep it from burning you.
“What do you want, Mickey Free?” he asked.
I hesitated, seeking the right way to broach Sieber’s question. Like most White Eyes, Al thought Geronimo would answer my questions just because we’re both Apache. He didn’t understand Geronimo is Bedonkohe and I was raised Coyoteros, what you people call a White Mountain Apache. Our peoples have been allies and enemies at various times. And, Geronimo knows my background. Sieber does, too, though maybe he’d forgotten. Not only am I a scout who’s assisted the Americans in making trouble for Geronimo and his people, I’m also a half-breed. We’re not enemies. Nor are we friends--despite the fact I've now saved his life for a second time.
Geronimo stared at me with all the friendliness of a rattler. I noticed he’d aged in the months he'd spent at San Carlos. The skin stretched taut over his wide face was scoured with wrinkles, his hair was shot with gray, his broad shoulders were stooped and there was a dimness in his dark eyes. San Carlos is hard on people. So it had been since the winter of 1875 when Al brought the Yavapai and Tonto here. The clans brought in later have fared no better. Many people have died, and Sieber has not been forgiven.
The shooting started before I had a chance to speak.

Book Tour w/Giveaway: The Star in the Meadow by Carla Kelly

"A romance in the middle of a really good Western novel."

THE STAR IN THE MEADOW

Series: The Spanish Brand, Book 4
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Camel Press
Publication Date: February 14, 2017
Will Marco choose love or duty?
Marco Mondragón and his wife Paloma are living hectic but happy lives at the Double Cross, on the edge of Comanchería. Five years after the death of Comanche leader Cuerno Verde, cautious diplomacy between the tribe and the colonists is underway to end Comanche raids into New Mexico. Paloma's time has been fully consumed by her two toddlers and newborn son and Marco's by spring planting.
The Seven Year Audit of 1784 arrives and with it comes auditor Fernando Ygnacio. After years of incarceration for a crime he did not commit, Señor Ygnacio is a broken man. Although his daughter Catalina is bitter about his mistreatment by his superiors, her storytelling abilities captivate the household, including a frequent visitor from the nearby presidio, El Teniente Joaquim Gasca, who has been undergoing his own reformation from rascal to leader.
Unknown to him, Marco has peculiar enemies plotting his downfall. When Paloma and Catalina set out on a visit to Marco's sister, meant to give Paloma relief from her busy life, the women are kidnapped. Devastated, Marco is torn between love and duty. He yearns to search for his wife, but feels bound by colonial duties to accompany his friend Toshua to Río Napestle, where Comanches have gathered to debate the region's fragile peace. In his absence from the Double Cross, will Joaquim Gasca and Toshua's wife Eckapeta be able to find the missing women?

Excerpt:

Excerpt from Chapter Thirty – “In which La Llorona wails for her children and Paloma sees things”

(Catalina has frightened their captors by pretending to be La Llorona, while Paloma has been digging an escape route from the shed where they are incarcerated)

Paloma laughed, but maybe a little too long, because Catalina pulled her close. “We’re getting out of here tonight, Paloma. I promise.”
“Let’s go right now,” Paloma said, and tried to rise.
“Catalina held her more gently now. “We have to wait a little long for Old Maria – no, Maria Brava, to toss a bloody sheet over the wall.”
“If she doesn’t?” Paloma asked, alert, her senses sharp again as the fog lifted from her overtaxed brain. “What will we do?”
She wanted Catalina to tell her that all would be well, wanted to hear some reassurance. Her friend remained silent.
Paloma dug deeper into her heart and soul, deeper than she had ever dig before. Every lovely moment of her life since she had come to Valle del Sol seemed to pass in review. Maybe she was just hungry, maybe her mind was beginning to wander again, but somehow she saw more – three little ones plating by the acequia instead of two, a fourth baby at her breast, full now and flowing with milk. And there was Marco standing by her, his hand on her head as he ruffled her hair so carelessly as he liked to do. She leaned against his leg and he bent down enough to whisper in her ear. “Happy?”
“Oh, yes,” she whispered back.
“What?” It was Catalina, recalling her to a reeking hut and starvation and fear that a beaten-down, worn-out laundress might not fulfill her vital part. “What?”
Paloma tucked the lovely little vision back into her heart. “Catalina, we’re getting out. This hole…you first, or me?”
Carla Kelly’s writing is masterful, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this whole series, and I believe you would enjoy each book more if you read them all. STAR IN THE MEADOW is a stellar conclusion which will reside on my keeper shelf.

About SJ McCoy

Hi, I’m SJ, a coffee addict, lover of chocolate and drinker of good red wines. I’m a lost soul and a hopeless romantic. Reading and writing are necessary parts of who I am. Though perhaps not as necessary as coffee! I can drink coffee without writing, but I can’t write without coffee.

I grew up loving romance novels, my first boyfriends were book boyfriends, but life intervened, as it tends to do, and I wandered down the paths of non-fiction for many years. My life changed completely a few of years ago and I returned to Romance to find my escape.

I write ‘Sweet N Steamy’ stories because to me there is enough angst and darkness in real life. My favorite romances are happy escapes with a focus on fun, friendships and happily-ever-afters, just like the ones I write.

These days I live in beautiful Montana, the last best place. If I’m not reading or writing you’ll find me just down the road in the park – Yellowstone. I have deer, eagles and the occasional bear for company, and I like it that way :0)

Promo Blitz: Kane Moss by C.D. Tuttle

Western
 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Kane Moss, a rather large, easygoing cowboy who would prefer to be left alone, finds himself leading a small posse on a bloody trail of reckoning.

Their remote Wyoming mountain village burned and pillaged by a murderous gang they are charged by their elders to find the gang and take their retribution. Little did they know that their pursuit would take them from their small mountain village to Ojinaga, Mexico. Kane Moss is no stranger to trouble. He has travelled a considerable part of the West riding shotgun on stages and participating in posses hunting for stage robbers. He has a strong code of honor learned from his upbringing and tries to do right. Sometimes naïve in trusting others he makes blunders, but always manages to come out on top. His determination is one to be reckoned with. Klatchard Bordiaz, leader of the murderous gang is a man full of hatred and contempt for anyone who has earned a decent life. He is intemperate and unrestrained having viciously killed his first man at the age of fourteen. He commands a large gang of murderers and thieves known as the Klatch Gang. On their way back to Ojinaga from a cattle drive to Montana they attack a small mountain village in the Medicine Bow Mountains of Wyoming Territory. Burning, raping and plundering the residents of this unsuspecting mountain village they stir up a hornet’s nest of angry mountain folks who are unforgiving when done wrong.

Among Kane’s posse is a young woman, Sarah Jane, who lost a brother and sister in the raid on their village. She is a determined woman and will be put down by no man. Nothing will stand in the way of her seeking revenge on the Klatch gang.

Sometimes humorous and rollicking, at other times deadly serious, their determination never fades. Through false leads, blunders and marauding Indians they manage to catch up to the raiders in the lawless village of Ojinaga. Here they find they are also up against the Mexican Rurales. The odds of success are overwhelmingly against them as Kane Moss and his small posse faces the intemperate and cold-blooded Klatchard Bordiaz, a much-feared vicious killer and gang leader.

EskieMama & Dragon Lady Reads Review: Hometown Cowboy by Sara Richardson

Hometown Cowboy
Rocky Mountain Riders #1
by
Sara Richardson

Blurb:

NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH A COWBOY
Jessa Mae Love is done with relationships. No matter how tempting he might be, she cannot--will not--fall for a man like Lance Cortez. The outrageously handsome cowboy is practically a living legend in Colorado, as famous for riding bulls as he is for breaking hearts. What would a big-time rodeo star like him see in a small-town veterinarian who wears glasses, rescues animals, and cries when watching rom-coms? Turns out, plenty.

Raising bulls, riding the circuit, and looking after his ailing father--Lance never stands still for long. Yet Jessa catches his attention, and the more she tries to resist him, the more he wants her. When she agrees to move to the ranch to keep an eye on Lance's dad, Jessa tells him they have to keep it professional: no flirting, no sweet talk, and definitely no kissing. But with Jessa now living under his roof, that's easier said than done . . .

Review:                                 5 stars

Sara Richardson knows how to write small town romances, I have found she is one of my go to authors if I want a small town romance read. I really enjoyed Hometown Cowboy it had everything this gal enjoys in a good read, a sexy cowboy, a sassy heroine, a family secret, friends and family who knows what’s going on before the hero does, & lots of laughs.

Lance Cortez, a professional bull rider, needs help to keep an eye on his father Luis Cortez, after he wanders off and is acting strangely to Lance. Who better than his father’s best friend’s daughter Jessa Love who Luis Cortez considers a daughter while he trains for his last chance to take the World that he only took years ago. Jessa Love is the town veterinarian and owner of the Animal Rescue and Shelter that she inherited from her dad whom died a year ago. Lance offers her a deal to donate half of his winnings when he wins the Worlds to the rescue and shelter if she moves in with his father and keeps an eye on him while he trains. She accepts the offer but will she be more of a distraction than help.

Hometown Cowboy was a great beginning to a Sara Richardson’s new series Rocky Mountain Riders. I can not wait to return to Topaz Falls and she which brother gets roped by cupid next and join the girls once again at The Chocolate Therapist for their “book club”

If you are looking for a small town weekend read I recommend you pick up a copy of Hometown Cowboy.

I received a free copy for my honest review!

Excerpt:

No Games

“What is this place?” Mia asked. “One of the private rooms?”

“You might say that.” Brandon turned the pad to her. “There. That should cover it.”

Grabbing hold of the pad, she knitted her brows as she read. Agreement Contract. Rule #1: What Brandon McLemore deems appropriate stands and Mia Santero will follow. There were two signature lines below it. She snapped her gaze to Brandon’s and practically screeched, “Wait. Are you nuts?”

“Not in the least,” he drawled, gifting her with customary penetrating stare. “That rule covers everything that will go on between us.”

Mia felt the blood thud in her temples. Unable to hold her tongue, she scoffed, “That rule isn’t a rule. It’s a diktat! How am I supposed to abide by a command that gives you complete freedom and authority to do as you see fit? You’ll have all the power. Over me.”

“Little researcher, you asked if I’m good,” Brandon began, incrementally closing the distance between them. The power he exuded stole the thoughts right from her brain. His gaze dipped to her mouth, then rebounded to her eyes. “Darlin’, I’m not good. I’m a machine. I like it rough, raw, and I don’t hold back. I’ll make it my job to know what you want, but more importantly, what you need. There’s a huge difference, and that’s what distinguishes who commands and who pretends. I don’t pretend.”

“But…” She swallowed, believing every word he’d said. “You’d have to pretend with me.”

He reached out and cupped her chin in his warm hand. “No, I won’t. That’s not what you need for this project or otherwise.”

“Then what will you do?” Her body hummed from the heat in his eyes. “I need to be certain I know what to expect.”

“That’s fair,” he murmured. “We can both get what we want. You want privacy and so do I. Out there. But when we’re alone, there won’t be any games between us.”
