EskieMama & Dragon Lady Review: Fire on the Farm by Betty Shreffler

Fire on the Farm
by
Betty Shreffler

Blurb:

Losing the man she loved to a terrible accident, pushes Amy Flanders into a life of independence. Her only source of comfort is her work—a business dedicated to the care and training of horses. Until one lonely night leads her into the arms of Brock Baisdin. A man who fulfills her deepest desires and reignites a flame long forgotten.

Between his picky tastes and running his own business, Brock Baisdin has little time for women, but that doesn't stop him from looking for love. After saving Amy from a cancelled date, Brock is instantly drawn to the shy and beautiful woman hiding secrets beneath her lust-filled baby blues—secrets he finds himself eager to discover.

Undeniable attraction pulls them into each other's arms. Hope draws them into each other's lives. For Amy Flanders, Brock Baisdin may be the man to bring love back into her lonely life, if only she can overcome the wounds of her past and face her biggest fear—risking the pain of another shattered heart.

Review:                                     4 stars

Amy Flanders lost her husband, the love of her life in a farm accident at a young age. She felt she couldn’t go on with her life without him, but with her work of caring and training horses she did carry on but she would never leave another man in her heart the heartbreak almost destroyed her, but two years later Brock Baisdin walked into her life and he was determined to break that wall down around her heart. Will Amy allow that wall to come down or will she let the man who makes her feel alive again walk out of her life forever.

Fire on the farm was one of those books that make you laugh one moment and the next you feel a tear creeping out of your eyes. Brock is any woman’s dream man, it was love at first sight when he set his eyes on Amy, but after only one night together he knew he had to take things slow with her and dang did he do everything to help Amy tear that wall down. Just when Amy finally had that wall down and letting her heart love again tragedy hit again and those walls went back up, just for a little while until a miracle came into her life. Fire of the farm was a sweet romance but hot sexy scenes, the chemistry between Amy and Brock was out of this world. I fell in love with all the characters in Fire on the farm except Brock’s mama Johann now she was a deceitful mean witch, when it came to Brock and Amy’s relationship I just wanted to strangle her.

I recommend you to pick up a copy of Fire on the Farm and watch Brock tear that wall around Amy’s heart down.

Betty Shreffler is a self-proclaimed nerd and nature enthusiast obsessed with folklore, photography, writing, reading, movies, board games, hiking, gardening and spending time with her husband and five fur babies. Not necessarily in that exact order though. During her outdoor adventures she's been face to face with an alligator, a bear and a coyote, making for some of the most memorable experiences of her life. She loves to capture and share the world's beauty through the lens of her beloved Nikon camera. Her work experience has been diverse from working as a Ranger for the National Park Service to management positions in Fortune 500 companies. She’s lived in four different states and moved homes twelve times. She received a BA in organizational management and minor in sociology, although her heart has always belonged to writing and photography. Growing up, she read romance or supernatural novels and jotted down poems and short stories to express her emotions and alleviate the characters' voices in her head. Not much has changed, only now her stories are lengthier and her characters more interesting.

Now he's determined to prove to Lily that he's back for good and ready to commit, but the secrets she's holding onto are nothing compared to the bombshell he drops...

Review:                                    5 stars

Jack Bailey left Shadow Creek Montana five years ago,  after losing his identical twin brother and nephew in tragic accident.  Leaving behind his mother, father, sister and the love of his life the woman he asked to marry him Lily Cookson, thinking everyone would be better off without him. Just looking at him they would see his twin brother Michael.

After an email from his sister Gwen, telling him he needed to get home due to their father’s illness, he returns home.  But he has his work cut out for him if he thinks Lily will allow her back into her life, she may still be in love with him but she feels she can never trust him again, after he left her and made her suffer the most devastating loss of her life, their baby, she can’t allow him back into her life. But after a few week after a New Year’s Eve night spent together, when morning sickness kicks in a few weeks later, Lily realizes staying away from Jack just got a whole lot harder. But when secrets come out will it make them or break them.

The Baby Bombshell was a short & sweet second chance romance, about loss & forgiveness. It had everything this reader loves in an amazing romance book small town atmosphere, loving & caring friends, second chance love, a few giggles and a few tears shed, a whole lot of tears shed on the two chapters for this gal. I just felt the agony that Jack was going through when coming back to Shadow Creek after five years the burden he was carrying, think he had burned a lot of bridges but in reality when people love you they are always there with open arms when you return. The scenes between Jack and Lily you could feel how much each cared and loved each other but had to let go of the past before they had any chance of building a future together.

This was the second book I have read by Victoria James and definitely there will be more to come. If you are looking a wonderful evening read I recommend you pick up The Baby Bombshell Baby, but be warned have a few kleenex near by!

I received a copy for my honest review!

W.S. Carmichael's
At Long Last!

Jenni Lynn Scott is a successful, single mother. She’s funny and independent, has a good relationship with her ex-husband and the greatest best friend a girl could ask for. So what if she’s a little lonely now and then? She loves her life – mostly.

Dylan Montgomery enjoys his carefree life, drifting from town to town. He has a thriving business flipping houses, and can’t imagine being tied down to one place.

Jenni Lynn hasn’t seen or heard from Dylan in fifteen years. They were best friends until the devastating destruction of his family forced him to leave town. He cut off all contact without explanation or apology. Naturally, she’s shocked (and maybe just a little angry) when he returns to Laurel Creek to help care for his grandmother. She’s even more shocked to discover the tall, lanky boy she remembers has transformed into one of the sexiest men she’s ever seen.

Reconnecting with Jenni Lynn has been both a blessing and a curse. A blessing, because Dylan is finally able to bring closure to his greatest regret - abandoning Jenni Lynn. A curse, because while they’ve been rekindling their friendship, she’s ignited a fiery passion inside of Dylan that is quickly burning out of control.

Warning - explicit content.

Q & A with W.S. Carmichael about At Long Last!

Tell us about At Long Last.

At Long Last is a contemporary romance novel about estranged friends and second chances.

Dylan Montgomery and his family left town suddenly after the death of his father when Dylan was seventeen. Jenni Lynn was his best friend, but shortly after he moved away, he cut off all contact with her, without explanation.

He returns to Laurel Creek fifteen years later to care for his grandmother, who happens to be Jenni Lynn’s ex-landlord and good friend.

When Jenni Lynn discovers he’s back in town, there’s shock, anger and a few tears. However, it doesn’t take long before their friendship is rekindled, along with a steamy attraction they can’t ignore.

The novel is written in alternating, first-person viewpoint, making it a fun, fast read.

What initially inspired you to write At Long Last?

I’ve always had an interest in writing, but the time never seemed right. I was busy with my job, three kids, husband, and well, life. I can’t explain the internal drive I felt, but I suddenly knew the time was right to finally put pen to paper. So, I began by fleshing out the characters’ personalities, and allowed those traits to direct the flow of the book.

Tell us little about the characters in At Long Last.

Dylan Montgomery is thirty two years old. He owns a successful business flipping houses around the country. He’s determined never to fall in love, never to give anyone that kind of power over him. Like most men, he thinks he has life all figured out. That is, until a woman comes along and makes him question everything.

Jenni Lynn Scott is a single mother of a thirteen year old boy. Her med school plans derailed when she came home from her first year of college with a rapidly swelling belly. She and the baby’s father tried to make it work, but divorced when he fell in love with someone else. Never one to be bitter, Jenni Lynn eventually became a nurse and worked hard to make a life for her and her son, Jase.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Finding time to write was probably my biggest challenge. I have three teenagers, a husband and a full time job. While I would love to write full time, this gig isn’t paying the bills just yet. Someday, maybe. For now, I squeeze in time whenever I can, often at the expense of my precious sleep.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

My favorite part is when Dylan admits to himself he’s in love with Jenni Lynn. He tries so hard to fight it, but once he finally concedes to his feelings, he realizes he can never go back to the empty life he had before.

What are your future project(s)?

Right now, I’m working on book two in the Laurel Creek series. It’s the story of Emma, Jenni Lynn’s best friend, and Matt, Dylan’s younger brother. Not to toot my own horn (alright, maybe a little), but I think readers will love it even more than At Long Last. Initially, I had planned on a Fall 2017 release, but it’s going so well I may be able to release sooner. I’ll keep you posted.

Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers about this book/series?

I’ve gotten great feedback on At Long Last. If you like contemporary romance, give it a try. It’s a fun, fast read. Also, there is strong language and explicit sexual scenes, not appropriate for anyone younger than 18. Available on Amazon for Kindle or in Paperback.

Now an exciting excerpt At Long Last!

I make my way down the steps to the first landing, enjoying the slight creak in the stairs. Muffled voices are coming from the kitchen. Most likely someone from church, or someone dropping off mending. Gram was a seamstress when she was younger, and she still does some alterations and repairs every now and then. Like I said, she doesn’t need the money, but it keeps her busy and she enjoys it.

Moving through the living room, I hesitate. Debating whether I should interrupt, the visitor’s voice carries clearly to where I’m standing. Wait. Is that Jenni Lynn? What the hell is she doing here? She’s supposed to be a doctor. In a big hospital. In the city. Not here. Definitely not here. All she talked about when we were growing up was moving far away from here.

I lost touch with Jenni Lynn after I moved away. She was my best friend, but I have to admit I wasn’t a very good friend to her. When we moved to Arizona, I put all my energy into forgetting. The few times I did call Jenni Lynn I’d miss her so much after we hung up. It was like losing Dad, Jenni Lynn and my whole life all over again. And again. And again. Finally, I just stopped returning her calls. It hurt too much. I always meant to try again when I felt stronger, but I kept finding excuses until too much time had passed.

Jenni Lynn was amazing. She was beautiful, but not in the head cheerleader way. She was thin with a simple, natural beauty. She had this huge personality you couldn’t ignore and a heart to match it. She was one of the most compassionate people I knew, but sometimes her compassion manifested itself in brutal honesty. Everyone knew if they asked her opinion on something, they’d get it, pure and unfiltered. You never had to guess what she was thinking. If she was happy, you knew it. If she was pissed, you definitely knew it. I doubt she's still holding a grudge, but if she is, I'm about to hear about it.

Turning the corner into the kitchen, I’m expecting to see my skinny, freckle faced friend. What I see instead is a woman, and a very attractive one at that. She’s grown her hair out. Her long red hair is in a loose ponytail that trails down her back, drawing my eyes to an amazing ass even those baggy scrubs can’t hide. Before I can get too distracted, I hear her ask Gram if the truck in the drive belongs to a contractor. Either Gram wasn’t expecting company tonight, or she purposely didn’t tell Jenni Lynn I’d be here. In any case, I’d better get it over with.

“Nope. It’s mine.” At first, there is no reaction other than the sharp intake of breath and the stiffening of her shoulders. When she turns to face me, her expression quickly changes from one of surprise to one of fury.

“You bastard!” is all she says before storming out of the house.

Author Bio:

W.S. Carmichael is the mother of three busy teenagers and two adorable golden retrievers, wife to the love of her life, full time nurse, mediocre (at best) Tae Kwon Do practitioner, daughter, sister and friend extraordinaire and part time (hoping one day to be full time) author.

Alright, not really. While she does strive for all of the above, she's usually a hot mess and is perpetually late. She forgets more than she remembers, there's almost always a protective layer of dust on her furniture and sometimes she really doesn't care if the kids eat cereal for dinner.

But, she does love her family and is eternally grateful for the support they offer while she writes her heart out. Her first book At Long Last has been well received, and she's hoping to release the next novel in the Laurel Creek series before fall 2017.

She's especially thankful to her fans. Without all of you, her dreams of becoming an author would still be languishing in a tattered notebook somewhere.

Excerpt:

Technically, I didn't drop my drawers the first time I saw her again. Just my balls.
The ones in my hands. Juggling balls.
Here’s how it went down. Picture a Sunday morning in Central Park. A perfect summer day. The grass was green, the breeze was warm, and I’d just spent the last few hours getting acquainted with turtles and frogs at the children’s zoo because I’m an awesome uncle. And Carly’s one cool seven-year-old.
The kid loves all creatures, but especially the ones that jump and crawl, so I took her to the enchanted forest part of the zoo. When we finished, she tugged on my shirt sleeve, batted her hazel eyes, and asked ever so sweetly for an ice cream cone.
Like I stood a chance at resisting her. C’mon. She’s my cousin’s kid, and clearly she gets her charm from our side of the family.
With her hand in mine, we strolled across the grass near the running path, hunting for the nearest ice cream dealer.
And then Carly did that thing little kids do.
She shrieked for what seemed like absolutely no reason. Next, she pointed to an impossibly tall dude wearing a beret while juggling two Rubik’s Cubes, two orange balls, and a small green beanbag.
“He can do five, Uncle Tyler!” Carly shouted, her eyes going wide.
“Five isn’t too shabby,” I said with a shrug.
She turned to me with a questioning stare. “I’ve never seen you do five.”
“That’s because I haven’t shown you all my tricks yet.”
“Can you really juggle five balls?”
I scoffed. “Please, I can do that with my eyes closed.”
I didn’t put myself through law school juggling for nothing.
Just kidding.
You can’t put yourself through law school juggling anything but insane class schedules and lack of sleep.
Carly arched an eyebrow. So did the juggler, as he kept up the cascade of his quintet. Show-off.
“I want to see. Show me,” Carly urged.
Yeah, Carly’s a chip off the old block. She’s all about challenging me, and I’m all about rising to the challenge.
The stick-thin guy with the beret raised his chin. “Have at it, man.”
With clockwork precision, he let the balls fall out of orbit and into his palm. Next, the Rubik’s Cubes. Then the beanbag. He stepped closer, handed me the objects, and flashed a crooked, put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is grin.
Game on.
Packs of runners jogged along, cyclists wheeled over the black asphalt, and rollerbladers whizzed by on the concrete. With my feet parked hip’s width apart, I stood at the edge of the grass getting a feel for the items, weighing them, and then one, two, three, four, five, I whisked each one up into the air in a high oval arc. Round and round, in a perfect five-ball cascade.
Carly clapped, then demanded more. “Yes, now close your eyes!”
I groaned. What was I thinking? Juggling with eyes closed is fucking hard. But I could pull it off for a couple seconds. My special skill. I obliged my niece’s request, pulling off a few quick blind ovals. Five seconds later, after I’d shown off that particular party trick, I opened my eyes.
And I saw a vision from my past.
A blond beauty, with long legs, a lovely round ass, and a high ponytail swishing back and forth across her shoulders. She ran along the path in tiny orange let-me-peel-them-off-with-my-teeth-pretty-please running shorts. And that face. Dear Lord, the stunning face of an angel. High cheekbones. Deep brown eyes that saw me like no one ever had. Those red lips, shaped like a bow. Fuck me, the things she could do with those lips. The things I taught her to do with that sinful mouth.
Delaney sure as hell knew how to use it, and I don’t just mean in the bedroom. We used to talk about anything and everything when we were together in college. Days with her. Nights with her. Best time of my life. That woman was full of spark. Full of fire. So damn passionate. And look at her now.
Jesus Christ.
It had to be illegal to be that smoking hot.

Yeah. I'm that guy. But the instant I run into her again I’ve got one goal and one goal only—a second chance. The plan? Go big or go home.
