About TWISTED DESIRE by Sharon Kay From New York Times bestselling author Cristin Harber and Award-winning author Sharon Kay comes an exciting collaboration… Rhys MacLeod is a warrior first and a hacker second. The discovery of a man killed by magical force on a Chicago street lands him on an op he didn't expect. He's good, but solving this crime requires a call to the best of the best. Parker Black of Titan Group never met a network he couldn't infiltrate. Along with Titan team member Locke Oliver and Megan, a scientist who witnessed the murder, they uncover a maze of encrypted files and unethical DNA manipulation. She sipped some kind of flavored chai latte thing and dug into a blueberry muffin. “So, I googled Titan last night.” “Yeah?” The combination of her soft voice and direct statement sounded sexy, though Locke knew the Titan website was anything but. It was slick and basic. All vital details went through Jared Westin, who seemed to know everything important going on in the world at any given time. “What’d ya think?” She gave him a piercing look “I can’t tell exactly what you do. You said private investigation last night, but the site has a lot of stuff that…” He studied her with a half smile, waiting to see how she would describe the glossed over version of Titan’s work. “Well, it’s like out of an action movie. Or the news. Government stuff going on in the Middle East…security, risk management.” Her brows knit together. “I don’t really get it, but maybe I shouldn’t.” “All you need to know is we protect those who need it, and lock up the ones who cause harm.” She tilted her head. “Do you go all over the world doing this stuff?” “Yup.” “Like where?” “Europe. Africa. Middle East.” He took a swig of his coffee. “Middle East,” she repeated with a hushed, awed tone. “With terrorists?” He nodded. She didn’t need to hear details. “Jesus,” she murmured, barely audible. “And now you’re stuck babysitting me.” He shook his head. “Not babysitting. Someone at your workplace was brutally murdered and Christ, Megan, you’re a witness. We’re not gonna let anything happen to you.” “I-I really don’t think that person—or whatever it was—saw me.” “Doesn’t matter. We don’t know, and until we do, we’ll keep you safe. And you’re helping us out. Trying to read those files.” She frowned. “I don’t feel like I helped much.” He reached across the table to cover her small hand with his. “Trust me, you did.” Hell, she kept her cool when others would have screamed or panicked. Instead, Megan had dug into Jerry’s files with an interest he could only watch in awe, rattling off cell-count-this and electrolyte-that. Her eyes met his as a tiny smile tilted her lips. She didn’t pull her hand away, but twisted it in his. With her other fingers, she lightly traced his knuckles. “Do you flirt with all the girls you protect?” “No.” That was the god’s honest truth. Better not to fuck the job, as his boss Rocco liked to warn. But something about this tiny, smart-as-hell woman got under his skin. Never mind that he’d known her less than a day.

Excerpt:

Isabel rose slowly to face Sir Drogo. She let him hold the canvas drape aside before stepping past him into the bracing chill of the great hall.
She shivered. It was time.
Unfortunately, by the look on his face, the dark suggestion in his voice—and the drawn curtain—she knew exactly what it was time for.
Her lesson on how to seduce a man.
“Are you cold?” he asked, his brow lowered.
In her fantasy, it was out of concern for her, after her spill in the icy beck.
“Not a bit,” she snapped, annoyed with herself for wishing he felt something, anything, for her.
She let him take her hand in his and lead her toward the smoky light of the brazier at the distant end of the hall, as far from the entrance to the kitchen—and Maggie and the others—as the manor house would allow.
“Do you remember what you learned about the dancing the other day?” he began.
“I already knew how to dance, so your instruction was wasted.”
He halted abruptly, crushing her fingers with his, and put his other hand to her cheek to nudge her face toward him. His words were steady, his expression impassive. “A lady must be gracious and kind at all times, even if her wrath is invoked.”
Glory of God, how she wanted to spit. She should be gracious and kind. The man had just saved her and Phoebe’s lives! But her contrary nature reared up instead...because his very nearness made her tremble with inexplicable excitement. Unacceptable!
With her teeth bared in a false smile, she said, “Thank you, my lord, for your careful instruction. I do recall precisely what you tried to tell me in your inadequate language, which hasn’t the vocabulary to accomplish what it needs.”
He tugged on her arm, imparting a jolt of pain to her shoulder. She used her free hand to rub it, giving him her meanest glower.
“Say it again,” he commanded. “This time, praise me for my vast knowledge and sage advice.”
Her jaw dropped in disbelief. She couldn’t help it. She stopped rubbing her shoulder.
“Say it,” he repeated, placing his thumb beneath her chin and applying upward pressure until her mouth closed. “Tell me how you could never manage without my esteemed guidance.”
“You jest, surely.”
His hand remained below her chin and the pad of his thumb brushed gently over her lips. Whatever did he mean by the gesture? It seemed overly personal, aggressive.
She should have shoved his hand away, loudly declared his impertinence, but something kept her from doing so—his gaze locked on hers, perhaps, or the fact that his other hand still gripped hers immovably against his thigh.
“I’ve never been more serious, he said.

Excerpt:

Santa Rosa, CA, January 1967

A half-hour later Grace tossed back the last mouthful of lukewarm coffee and closed the cover on the first of two instruction manuals. “Okay, new electric beast, let’s see what you can do.”

Tentatively, she rolled a piece of blank paper into place and poked at the stationery carriage. When she pressed the switch on the side of machine, the motor hummed to life. She’d barely placed her hands on the keyboard when the font ball began spinning wildly and spitting out the letter ‘j’ across the width of the page. Her heart hammered inside her chest in perfect time with the tiny metal device.

Jerking her hands back from the keyboard, she reached for the power button and flipped it to the ‘off’ position then drew a breath to calm her racing pulse.

She reached for the second manual. Obviously, there was more she needed to know.

The second manual held no information regarding the typewriter but, rather, was a set of guidelines for the perfect secretary. “The perfect secretary does not turn in a letter that is less than letter perfect. She does not smudge her carbon copies. She does not gossip.”

Grace pressed her fingertips to her lips and fought back an outright laugh. Were it not for the daily rounds of gossip, she doubted the secretaries she’d met thus far would make it through their work day.

Tracing the next few items on the list with her fingertip, she lowered her voice and continued. “She does not bring personal affairs to the office. She does not watch the clock. She will inquire if there is any little thing she can do before saying goodbye for the day.”

Closing the second booklet, she set it aside. It all sounded like common sense to her.

“Emme, talk to me.” “I can’t,” she whispered. What could she say? She couldn’t even explain it to herself. “Do you want me to leave?” She moved closer to him and shook her head. That was the last thing she wanted. Jordan made her feel safe. Protected. She knew he wouldn’t let anything happen to her. He’d literally fought for her already. “You’re killing me. I don’t know what to do.” His hands ran up and down her back, trying to sooth her. “Kiss me.” Oh, jeez. Did she really just say that? Is that what she wanted? “Emme—” “Please, Jordan.” She unburied her head. “I want you to kiss me. I need you to. I need to feel something other than all the crap I’m feeling now.” A small furrow appeared between his brows. “Please,” she whispered. His head tilted and hovered a hairsbreadth away from her lips. She slid her hand behind his head, running her fingers over the soft stubble at the base of his neck and pulled him closer. His lips were firm but gentle. She didn’t want gentle. She wanted to feel. She wanted to feel him. Opening her mouth, she touched her tongue to his lips. His sharp inhale signaled his surprise and he groaned. “Emme.” “More.” She pressed her mouth against his again. He reciprocated and his tongue laved her bottom lip before delving into her mouth to tangle with hers. She moaned and pressed closer, closing the distance between their bodies. Now she realized why he’d kept some space between them. His erection nudged her lower stomach through their pajama bottoms. She threw her leg over his hips, eliciting a deep groan. He ended their kiss, pressing his forehead against hers. His breathing was harsh. Tortured. “Emme, we have to stop.” “No, we don’t.” She tried to pull him back to her mouth, but he resisted. “You’ve just gone through a horrible experience. I know you’re feeling a lot of confusing emotions, but this isn’t the way to handle them.” “You don’t understand. You might think you do, but you don’t. All my power was stripped from me. I was beaten and tossed around like I was trash. I need to feel something good. I need to have hands on me that don’t bring me pain.”
